An eventful week in London, indeed! There were a lot of good things that happened this week, and some bad. Bad things first: I got sick (again) Thursday, but this time I have rhinosinusitis, the fancy and dramatic way of saying sinus infection, along with a double ear infection. Luckily, I was able to see a private doctor who gave me effective antibiotics. As a result, I was instructed to stay in my room and sleep and wait to resume classes on Monday. That put a bit of a damper on my weekend plans (I’ll have a tall rum and coke on the rocks…but hold the rum).
The good news is I got to write a fun feature for Square Meal, which involved me toodling around London Tuesday and Wednesday sampling, reviewing, and writing about the best macaroni and cheese recipes the capital has to offer. Lobster Mac and Cheese, Truffle Mac and Cheese, Bacon Mac and Cheese—needless to say my pants are fitting a bit tighter now. I felt like Andrew Zimmern and Adam Richman this week.
It was quite ironic that the day my Europe Since 1935 history class was learning about the 1980s “Thatcher Era” Margaret Thatcher herself died. As a result, all flags in England were at half mast. That same day, my History of London Professor took us on a three hour walk around Green Park, which included a stop in the Queen’s favorite grocery store Fortnum and Mason. There were some wedding cakes on display there that cost 1200 pounds for 30 portions! I can only dream…
Luckily, the weather was sunny and warm so our got to take a stroll through the park and see the beautiful swans and ducks swimming around.
This weekend I have been working on a couple of research papers that are all due the second to last week of school. I figure I better get a head start before I get caught up in the midst of other assignments, tests, and internship applications. It is sad to think I only have three more weeks with Square Meal. It truly has been amazing working there. I am excited to see my cookbook review blurb in the spring edition of the Square Meal lifestyle magazine, which comes out in the next couple of days.Â
The weather in London is finally consistently warm. I can retire my puffy winter coat and mittens at last! Though it is still chilly and rainy, the weather has been significantly better. It was even 67 degrees on Sunday. As the weather gets better, it is becoming a lot harder to come to terms with the fact that I am leaving here in just six short weeks.Â
Time really does fly when you are having fun.Â
