“I won’t say she is perfect, or that she is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen, but in the moment her gaze finds mine, she’s the best parts of the universe.”
As I look out of the window, I see the snow has covered the whole park. It looks like a fairytale, and the best way to spend a weekend like this one is to have a hot cup of coffee and my favourite fairytale book in my hands: Geekerella.
Geekerella written by Ashely Poston is an allusion to, you guessed it, Cinderella! Now, I’m not the biggest fan of the Cinderella story, but when I read Geekerella’s description I was quite literally blown away. Even though the book is set in a modern setting, Poston does an amazing job of mixing real world elements with the fairytale world.
Elle Wittimer, our female protagonist from Charleston is by far my favorite character in the series, she works in the Magic Pumpkin (see the reference?), and her “prince” is none other than the Federation Prince Carmindor, also known as the famous teenager actor, Darien Freeman. Even though Elle and Darien come from different backgrounds, their shared love for Starfield, a 90’s hit sci-fi show, and a wrong number phone call brings them together against all odds. One of the best parts of this book is how Poston portrays the struggles of keeping the personal lives of celebrities, especially younger ones, private.
The book is filled with magic, love, laughs and good drama, so much so that you might end up reading it in one sitting (like I did!). With a lesbian fairy godmother, a Cosplay ball to a sweet twist of a not-so-evil twin stepsister, this book is by far one of the best modern adaptations of Cinderella. And I recommend to every non-cheesy, rom-com book reader (and everyone else) to pick this book up and allow yourselves to sink into fairytales, once again.
Many of you might be familiar with Poston’s Heart of Iron Series, but her Once Upon A Comic-Con trilogy has the perfect rom-com books to snuggle in with this weekend! The first book in the Once Upon A Comic-Con series is Geekerella, followed by Princess and the Fangirl, and the third and last book Bookish and the Beast.
