Many people have passions for all sorts of things – cars, flowers, playing cards, but for me? It’s iced chai lattes and a cozy study spot. As a self-proclaimed chai connoisseur, I challenged myself to find the best spot to enjoy my favorite treat-yo-self beverage after moving to a new town for college almost four years ago. Since then, I’ve tested out what feels like a million different spots in Hampton Roads to try their take on an iced chai latte.Â
Below are my top seven spots if you’re looking for an iced chai latte in Hampton Roads!
Elliot’s Fair Grounds, Norfolk, VA – Truly a classic. Elliot’s was one of the first coffeeshops I visited when I started looking for new study and hangout spots in the area. Not only do they make a great iced chai latte, but the atmosphere is so comfortable and welcoming. My go-to order here is an iced chai latte with almond milk and it hits the spot every time!Â
COVA Brewing Co., Norfolk, VA – Based on location, ambiance, and obviously, iced chai latte, COVA might be my go-to spot. COVA doubles as a coffee shop and brewery, and has top notch chai lattes and espresso martinis, and is perfect for a daytime study session or late afternoon outing. Their chai latte is on the sweeter side and is topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon. The jalapeno cheddar bagels are also a good add-on if you’re in need of a complimentary savory snack!
Granier European Bakery and Cafe, Virginia Beach, VA – Arguably one of the fanciest coffee shops I’ve visited, Granier opts for a clean, European-style decor and serves a delicious, milky chai latte topped with cinnamon. While you’re at it, the Nutella croissant is to die for!
Pangaea Coffee Emporium, Poquoson, VA – Although not necessarily Hampton Roads, but pretty close, Pangaea serves a mean chai latte. From the outside, Pangaea looks like your average coffee shop, but on the inside, it’s a jungle wonderland. Decorated with long, flowy plants and an earthy color scheme, this spot is perfect for those who enjoy doing their work outside but are avoiding the cold winter season. Their iced chai falls more on the milky side with a hint of cinnamon-y goodness served in a cute cup!
Black Rifle Coffee Co, Norfolk, VA – A twist on the classic chai, Black Rifle Coffee Co. offers a spicy chai latte. This is the first, and only, coffee shop I’ve found with a spicy chai latte, and I think it is best suited for a chilly day when you want to stray away from a sweeter chai. The initial sip is followed by a slight kick of heat that is sure to make your tongue tingle!
Colattao Coffee House, Virginia Beach, VA – This was one of those chai lattes where my eyes lit up with the first sip. Upon my first sip, I looked towards my friend and said, “This might be the best I’ve had.” It is the perfect combination of creamy and cinnamon-y and, if you’re dining in, it comes in a cute glass!
Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii, Virginia Beach, VA – One of my personal favorites by the oceanfront and serves a badass chai, literally. My order is, surprise, a badass iced chai latte and some kind of baked treat. For me, this chai is a bit spicier than a typical chai, but still has the perfect level of sweet and creamy.
