In grade school, one of the most popular icebreaker questions I came across was “What is your favorite season?” As easy as this question is to answer, I always struggled to answer it because I felt that each season held something so special that the other one did not. However, I began to realize that I love fall. I wanted to reflect on some of the reasons I love fall so much and how you can have the ultimate fall experience. There are so many things that you can do in autumn that make you feel like you are living in the pages of a fall romcom.

Autumn Decorating

In order to prepare for fall, I love to bring down my fall decorations and decorate my home. Some of my favorite decorations include pumpkins, blankets and fall themed pillows. This makes it feel super cozy. However, I know this can be overwhelming for many people. Social media shows so many houses that are covered head to toe with pumpkins, lights, and leaves. This does not have to be the case. You’d be surprised how cozy you can make your environment by putting up just a few decor pieces. You could even find cute DIYs that are made with items around the house for a fun new decoration. For these, I typically search on Pinterest. One of my favorite DIYs is pumpkin painting: all you need is a mini or medium pumpkin and some paint.

Fall Books

The next thing I like to do is curate my fall TBR. What’s better than sitting in your decorated house—reading a fall book in your decorated house! The way I like to do this is by just browsing the backs of books to see what they have to offer. I simply choose the ones I want based on whether they give me the autumn vibe. I will also utilize my Goodreads and TikTok to see what everyone is recommending! This fall, I have been reading The Pumpkin Spice Cafe by Laurie Gilmore and You, Again by Kate Goldbeck.

Autumn Watchlist

Similar to a TBR, picking out movies and TV shows are essential to my autumn experience. If I am sitting in my room filled with fun decorations, I want the TV shows I watch to immerse me even further. A show I love to watch in the fall is Gilmore Girls, or really any show or movie where school is starting soon. This really gets me excited for the first day of school. As far as movies, it can be hard to find ones that are specifically about fall. So, I typically like to watch fun Halloween movies. However, sometimes you can find movies with all the autumn vibes on the Hallmark channel!

Fall Wardrobe

Now that we have our environment decorated, our books on the bookshelves, and our shows picked out, we obviously have to match our vibe. Fall fashion is something that is so fun, and can be easy to do. If you are someone wanting to get into fall fashion, you really do not need much. Some of the basics that I see every fall are sweaters, cardigans, a skirt and black tights combo, and boots. The ways you can style a basic sweater are endless and can make for several very cute fall outfits. There is this big misconception that because there is a new season, you need to run out to buy a whole new wardrobe. This is by no means required!

Autumn Activities

Lastly, there are so many autumn experiences that your town likely offers. For example, a lot of local coffee shops have fun themed lattes and treats that you can get. Many areas also have pumpkin patches that are so fun to go to. Pumpkin patches are great, especially for a fall photoshoot. They typically have other activities to partake in such as hayrides, or even local vendors selling some of their products. Some of my friends indulge in apple picking as well. This also makes for a great background for some autumn photos! Afterward, you can bake something like an apple pie or any other unique recipe. You can also host a fun Halloween movie night. Tell your friends to come over in their spookiest pajamas, and bring candy and popcorn. For Halloween movies, I love the classics like Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown! If you want something more unique, go back to your favorite Disney shows and watch the Halloween episodes associated with them. This really brings feelings of nostalgia from being your younger self at Halloween time.

Fall has so many great opportunities to create memories, as well as engage with your community. If you’re thrilled for all of these fun activities, then maybe you are an autumn fanatic like me!
