Her Campus is a nationwide organization where women come together to inform, encourage and uplift other. Her Campus has always been for her, but why can’t it be for him also? Why are men not joining Her Campus?
When they see or hear the name “Her Campus,” most men might assume we’re a gender-biased organization, and with there not being a statistic on men involved in our organization, that assumption is justified. This lack of representation could be leaving men feeling excluded, uncomfortable and possibly even afraid of participating in an organization dominated by the opposite sex. Not to mention, when confronted with the various shades of pink Her Campus associates with, men may also find it a reason to steer clear from joining.
So, what can we do to get men involved?
I think getting men involved can be done by advertising to them, showing them in some way that they are wanted. By taking a different approach, engaging and doing little things to grab their attention, men might feel more comfortable with Her Campus and seize the opportunity to work with us.
But, why do I want men in this organization?
The reason I want men in this organization is because I feel they provide a different perspective. In my opinion, it would be nice to have a man’s input on different topics that are touched on and how they feel/perceive the world around us. Our Her Campus Advisor, Professor Peter Adams, is a great male figure within the Her Campus organization, and observing how he interacts with us and gives his opinions, shows me that if Her Campus had more men we could be an even stronger publication.
Ultimately, we need to work together! Once we clear up any gender-biased stigma that might be floating around, I think it will create room for men to want to join Her Campus.
This is something I encourage for any man who enjoys writing, is interested in trying something new or just wants his voice to be heard. If you or any of your friends are open to this opportunity, feel free to join or refer them to us! Her Campus would love to have all of you!
