How to Accomplish your Goals and Make 2018 your Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ODU chapter.

With every new year comes new resolutions and goals! Some of us are good at keeping up with goals and four months from now we’ll still be in the gym and have our summer body almost ready. We’ll have kept up with our water drinking habits and our skin will be glowing because of it. If you’re one of those people, go you! You’re who the rest of us are aspiring to be.

As for the ones who usually get 2 weeks into their goal and go back to old bad habits, it’s okay. Well, not really okay but, we understand. It’s not easy to get up and work out or stop yourself from having a brownie when it’s literally screaming your name. It’s not easy but it is possible and here’s how.

When we set new year’s resolutions they’re usually long-term or general goals like getting fit, drinking more water, eating healthy, save money, get more sleep, etc. All these goals are great but they’re so broad which makes them harder to accomplish. The key to accomplishing goals is making them SMART.

SMART goals are: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely. Setting up your goals this way will break them down into smaller steps that are specific. For example, if you want to get fit, you should break that down to working out twice a week or losing three pounds a week. That way you can measure or track your progress and your goal becomes more attainable because getting fit doesn’t happen overnight. Ensuring that your goals are relevant just means making sure they’ll actually benefit you and add value to your life. Setting a specific time to accomplish your goals will challenge you to stick to your word. Your time for your overarching goal to get fit could be before summer but breaking it down to a weekly goal keeps you on track.

Now, breaking your goals down isn’t a guarantee that you’ll be more motivated and actually get them done. For that, you may need a little extra push! So, here are some tips and tools to help you get up and get going!

Goal Apps

We all know there’s an app for everything so clear some space on your phone for one that will actually benefit you! Goal apps like Coach.me help you track your goals with a community of people who are working towards the same goal. They also offer coaches and you get props when you check into your goals. Having a community giving advice and suggestions is helpful in accomplishing any goal.

Social Media Restrictions

You know that one time you were supposed to get up and do something but then got distracted scrolling on Instagram for an hour? Yeah, we’ve all been there! It’s easy to get distracted by social media so setting time limits on your phone will stop you from scrolling for hours and help you get things done. You may think that sounds a little childish but our culture has become addicted to social media and even if you think you can control yourself, it’s better to set the restrictions so you can track your habits. Make sure you have a friend set the password so that you can’t let yourself on social media once you reach the time limit.

Set Goals with a Friend or Partner

A little outside motivation can be all we need to get moving on making our goals happen! Having someone on the journey with you with make it more fun and rewarding for both of you. Even if you don’t have the same goals you all can check in and keep each other on track with your own goals.

No matter what your goals are in 2018, may you accomplish them all. It starts with believing in yourself and knowing that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to!

Hi everyone, I'm Petra (PEE-truh) and I'm an ODU alumna who has branched out to sunny Southern California. Following graduation, I didn't have too much of a plan for where I was going in life but I knew to stay in Virginia was not an option. I wanted more than what was offered there so I started applying to almost every job in all my dream cities and life led me to San Diego. I now do sales, marketing and social media management for a great startup company, Voterfied. I love everything about San Diego and the work I'm doing here. So my advice to everyone, get out of your comfort zone! Take that leap of faith and let life guide you to exactly where you're meant to be. HCXO, Petra!
