How To Afford A Trip To New York This Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ODU chapter.

Summer is around the corner and it’s time to take that leap of faith and experience the big apple, New York City. It’s the city that doesn’t sleep, celebrity central, the American dream, so why haven’t you been yet? Expenses or maybe time constraints? Whatever the case, it’s never too late to get this experience. I want to give you pointers on how to make this dream trip possible. I haven’t been to many great locations in the country, but I feel that my experience can help others, so if you’re ready to begin planning that much needed trip to New York City, here’s where to start.

The main concern would be the budget. Before going on any trip, you should expect to spend at least $300.00 if lodging is included in the budget. Start by writing down is what you expect to spend money on. The essentials will be transportation, lodging, food and miscellaneous expenses. Determine how many days you’d like to stay; of course, the longer you stay, the more the trip will cost, so let’s focus on quick one or two night trips.

1. Transportation

Assuming you reside on the east coast or the midwest, acquiring cheap transportation to NYC is easy. There is no need for a boat or a plane. There are bus companies that will drive to NYC for as low as $30.00 one way or $60.00 round trip. According to Google, flights can be booked for $150.00 to $500.00 one way and train tickets range about the same. I personally recommend the bus, but be sure to read reviews upon choosing a company. Go To Bus is a reliable source that provides departure times, locations and reviews for charter bus companies all over the country. Having an itinerary and bus schedule is recommended to ensure that you don’t miss your ride and you have comfortable travels. Bus transportation can be set up in a single day.

2. Lodging

If you have family or friends you can stay with, housing is not a concern and that’s money you can pocket. If you don’t or events don’t go as planned, there are hotels in Downtown Manhattan for as low as $56.00 to $80.00 a night. That being said, keep in mind that you get what you pay for. Times Square is hotel central, but they can range from $200.00 for $350.00 for a single night, not including the possible deposit, which is another important point. Almost all hotels require a deposit of either the price of the room, or higher, that is returned upon checkout so be sure to use a credit card if a deposit is needed. Also, check with the hotel to make sure they take cash if you don’t intend on using a credit card.

3. Leisure

This is where your extra spending money comes into play. In New York, there is always something to do. There are people who stop you on the streets to show you tricks or ideas in return for pocket change. With technology it is nearly impossible to get lost so, using the subway system is easy. $3.00 per ride can get you anywhere in NYC plus there are subway attendants who can help. The streets are so active that it is possible to spend a full day in New York City without spending a dime on activities. There are free shows and other unexpected occurrences such as flash mobs and the infamous naked cowboy.

4. Minor Tips

Anywhere in the world can be dangerous, New York is no exception. Try to look as acquainted as possible by not staring up at the tall buildings. Doing so could make you an easy target for mugging or attack- be aware at all times. Do not sign up for credit cards, they are scams no matter how good they sound. Watch where you walk in the street. You could get hit by a car. Pay attention to the walking signals as best as possible and walk with the flow of the crowd. If you check out of your hotel and are wandering the streets, there are companies throughout the city who will keep your bags for a small fee so you can continue to explore without the weight of your luggage. Check reviews to ensure reliability of those keeping belongings. Google Maps will be your best friend, as I said, you can’t get lost if you have it. If you’re hungry and you don’t want to spend $25.00 for a meal, there are corner stores that sell the best pizza and breakfast sandwiches for $1.00 to $4.00. On second thought, when you wake up, go to the nearest corner store and ask for a breakfast sandwich even if you have tons of money for food. Whatever they give you will be the best thing you eat the entire trip, hands down.

Hopefully this guide is helpful and life will allow you to spontaneously take a trip to NYC. Good luck!

Hello. I'm the fiction writer stuck in a fantasy world. If I'm not dabbling in dark fiction or some odd form of creative nonfiction, I'm writing to encourage others to take the leap to follow their dreams. Cliche, I know, but it couldn't be more true. Surprise. Surprise. Following dreams is something many people are still hesitant about. I'm working to narrow that margin. ;)
