Emelia Douglas is a Junior Games and Animations major here at Ohio University, but she really thrives from her work off the screen. Emelia is an amazingly talented artist with a style unlike many you may have seen. She loves watercolors and using a drip effect. Unrealistic art is her forte and making things you wouldn’t always think to be the most beautiful, absolutely stunning.
Emelia wasn’t born a Frank Wilcox, but developed her skills over a period of time. She grew up loving Disney animation and cartons alike. Once she began watching anime, she started to notice the adaptations of the anime she was watching being drawn out by other artists on sites like deviantart.com. These adaptations were original and quirky. Emelia was hooked! She began making her own adaptations and finally got some love from a picture she drew of a cat (For the record, Emelia always has and always will LOVE cats.). Her confidence was boosted and she hasn’t stopped drawing since.
Over time she moved on from drawing anime to adapting some simple images of her own. Emelia will take a simple sketch of an elephant found on a Google search and turn it into something worth real money. She has even had her pieces commissioned and sold to help raise money for the service sorority she is a part of, Tau Beta Sigma, Alpha Delta.
Emelia has not only grown as an artist, but as a person as well. Her first well-received drawing of a cat was the start to her moral boost. Since then she has become so motivated to keep up with her art and found her passion to be more rewarding than the money she can make. The more she paints and draws, the happier she is. “I believe in myself now and my ability to create things, and I hope I can help others believe in their creative abilities too.” she says.
The best advice Emelia can give you if you are trying to make your own art is to not be afraid to make mistakes. She truly believes the creativity is something that shouldn’t be thought of as wrong or unappealing. Anything you create is a work of art, you just have to own it.
Now, Emelia is working on turning that art into a career by becoming a 2D artist/animator and continuing to do commissions. She is a part of organizations such as Ohio University’s Game Developers Association, plays clarinet in the Marching 110 and is the Vice President of Sisterhood in Tau Beta Sigma.
All painting aside, Emelia freely admits that she can’t do math, at all. She speaks Spanish like she’s Enrique Iglesias and cooks a mean Stromboli. Parks and Recreation is her favorite show and dying her hair different fun colors is her next adventure in changing her image. She loves her tattoo and wants more and wants to know who agrees with her that Meg from Hercules is super underrated.
EmeliaDouglas.com is where you can purchase some of her art. It will be open VERY SOON! To keep up to date on when the website is up and to see more of Emelia’s art check her out on Tumblr @edouggieart or Instagram @edouggie5.
