Most people have learned about slavery in their history classes, and most people think it’s a thing of the past. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Slavery is still occurring today, and this week, the End It Movement hosted events here at OU to raise awareness.

According to the End It Movement, 27 million people are currently slaves in 161 countries, including the United States. 8 of 10 human trafficking cases are somehow involved with the sex industry, and 80% of slaves are women. Apart from human trafficking, other types of slavery include bonded labor, child labor, and forced labor.

Throughout the week, various events such as an art show, guest speaker, and documentary were available for students to attend to raise awareness about slavery. One of the most eye opening events was the Day in the Life of a Slave event. Students could pick up various cards in which they were transported into a day in the life of a slave. Afterwards, one could take a survey in which they could discover how many slaves “work for them” by making the products they use or by working in ones area. Here is a link to the survey if you would live to find out how many slaves are working for you: http://slaveryfootprint.org/su…

Before, you may have thought that there were 0 slaves on the planet. Now, you are aware that there are at 27 million. It is up to us to raise awareness on this issue in order to end it. You can visit www.enditmovement.com and donate to the cause, or post #enditmovement in order to raise awareness.
