All of us are alike because we have all chosen a major. Whether that was easy or, if you’re like me, extremely difficult decision, we realize that this decision is the first of many steps of adulthood and is a struggle we share. But, we are all different in the paths that we take. Ohio University offers over 250 programs of study. At times we find ourselves not embracing this sense of diversity, but rather judging others’ majors—aka major shaming. Let’s take a look at some of OU’s very own major shames that we hear a lot around campus:
Business
Shame: “So easy. Basically, if you don’t know what you want to do, chose business.”
Don’t hate just because they may dress better than us! You may see them traveling in packs dressed in suits and pencil skirts. Truth is, the business majors are working just as hard as us… Doesn’t “cluster” sound familiar?

Nursing
Shame: “They think they’re all that or smarter than everyone!”
Spotted on campus with teal scrubs usually in Grover Hall, these students are just trying to learn how to save lives. And who knows? Maybe they’ll save yours one day! Don’t plaster a label onto an entire group of people when you had a bad experience with one stuck-up nursing student.
Communication Studies
Shame: “Broad and useless.”
Honestly it is broad, but that’s one of the many great things about it! I am a Coms major and frequently hear these judgments. One time someone tweeted, “Maybe I should switch my major to Communications,” implying that it would just be easier. Well, FYI: Choosing a Communication Studies major, or any major at that, and applying your skill will ensure a successful career, so back off, haters!

Journalism
Shame: “We get it, you like writing. But aren’t journalist careers impossible to find?”
Scripps is widely recognized as an excellent journalism school. Also, it’s not very easy to go into! Respect people who turn their passion of writing into a career. Just because newspapers aren’t so popular anymore doesn’t mean magazines or online sources don’t need writers!
Art
Shame: “Cool… so you paint stuff?”
Ask them to show you some of their work—you would take your negative comments back in a second! To them, figuring out what piece to make next can we as difficult as it is for you to write a paper or solve that calculus problem. Embrace other students’ skills!
Not everyone is just like you. We all obtain a different skill set and have different career goals. Bashing someone’s major will get you nowhere. Remember: Bobcats stand up for Bobcats!
