My Brutal, Honest Opinion on The Met Gala Looks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

Finally, the Met Gala is back after being cancelled last year due to COVID! This year’s Met Gala Theme was: In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. I have to be honest, I love the met gala, but some of these “fashion statements” sure made the wrong impression. However, I am so happy the Met is back!

To start off with a bang: Lil Nas X

In one of his Three Piece outfit

Personally, I loved this Lady Gaga-esque three piece Versace outfit. First it started out with a regal gold cape which revealed the what Nas says is armor and finally a 70s style boogie onesie that he refers to as “a sexy body suit.” I think this meets elegance with a bit of camp.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC)

In my opinion, I love the message she is trying to convey and the actual dress itself. It is designed by Brother Vellies. However, I feel wearing this at the Met Gala, which costs extreme amounts of money is in poor taste. I love AOC, but to be surrounded by some of the richest people in an event created by rich people and an expensive dress, it is kind of ironic. I do love the message she is trying to convey though.

Emma Chamberlin

This dress took a lot of materials, the gown itself has 21,000 microbeads, 9,000 rhinestones, 2,500 sequins, and 2,000 Swarovski crystals. All of that amazing stuff and I still hate this outfit. I keep on trying to convince myself that I like it, but in reality I don’t. This gown was made by Louis Vuitton. I’m sorry Emma, but I hope you felt beautiful in this!

Iman

This absolutely stunning gown was designed by Harris Reed who was inspired by the “Golden Age” of ballroom culture. When I think Met Gala, I think of this. Over the top, elegant and beautiful. Something that makes your jaw drop and you can’t stop saying “Wow.”

Serena Williams

I have adored Serena Williams ever since I was very small. She is a badass tennis player and an awesome woman. I was really disappointed to see her walk out in this. This Gucci silver body suit paired with a feather cape is something I genuinely do not like. The colors do not go together, the lace mixed with the feathers is a horrible texture to combine. I did not like this outfit one bit.

Kim Kardashian

This black body suit is what Kim Kardashian wore… one word that comes to mind- Kanye. I thought Kim and Kayne were done and this is confusing me. This outfit looks like the character venom, in a sort of cool way, but also this body suit terrifies me. It was not something I saw and thought, “Kim Kardashian!”

Megan Fox

I am absolutely in love with this outfit. The elegance and I can definitely see her inspiration in this look: Betty Page. Also, Megan Fox’s boyfriend, Machine Gun Kelly, wore a red bedazzled suit to the VMAs a few days before. I love the unity they still have even when apart and the fact that they can do different events alone. This gown is a Dunda dress and Megan absolutely rocked it.

Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner showed up in this beautiful Givenchy gown, inspired by Audbrey Hepburns “My Fair Lady” gown. This dress is just the definition of stunning, when I look at it, all I can see are beautiful stars and constellations. I normally don’t love sheer dresses, but I am absolutely obsessed with this one!

Rihanna

The more I look at this, the more I become confused. At first I hated this outfit, but now I don’t hate it as much. Rihanna is in a Balenciaga outfit that matched with A$AP Rockys quilt inspired look. I know for sure that I do not like A$AP Rocky’s look, but with Rihannas I remain conflicted.

Yara Shahidi

Inspired by the American-French Entertainer, Josephine Baker, Yara Shahidi showed up and wowed everyone at the Met Gala. This gown is created by Dior and Yara felt like she needed to pay tribute to Josephine Baker. Let me just say, I am obsessed. The gown is gorgeous, the inspiration is fantastic, and she was just stunning over all! One of my favorite all time looks from the Met Gala!

Olivia Rodrigo

More like Olivia RodriNO! I do not like this outfit at all. However, I love Olivia and think her album is one of the best I have heard in years. This lace and feather getup is by Yves Saint Laurent and again feathers and lace do not match! I expected more from Ms. Rodrigo!

Timothee Chalamet

Some of you may know him from his acting career staring in “Ladybird” or “Call Me By Your Name” and some may know him from his hilarious skit on SNL. I love Timothee with all of my heart, but this half casual half suit is not it. It feels like he was trying for the top and gave up on the bottom. Like come on! This is the Met Gala for crying out loud!

Barbie Ferreira

I love everything about this. It is an elegant pearl beaded gown by Johnathan Simkhai. This outfit fits perfect with the theme of America with Old Hollywood Inspiration and a bit of a 1920s tang. This ensemble is something new, something I have never seen before which is hard to come by at the Met. This is one of my favorite outfits of the night and forever on. Barbie looks stunning and I hope she felt that way too!

My favorite look of the met for the night:

Billie Eilish

This gown is the definition of American Fashion. Billie was inspired by Holiday Barbies and Marilyn Monroe. This dress by Oscar De La Renta features a 15 foot long train and is the definition of Old Hollywood Fashion. Billie even convinced Oscar De La Renta to go completely fur free! This year, Ms. Eilish is a CoChair for the Met Gala, actually the youngest CoChair in history. Billie has always wanted to wear a ballgown like this and finally made the brave choice to do so and I am so glad she did!

So, those are my completely honest, brutal opinions on the Met Gala outfits for the year of 2021. Fashion is a subjective subject and changes throughout everyone. Regardless of how I felt about someones outfit, I congratulate them for having the courage to go to the Met Gala and being invited there. I am so happy the fashion games have begun again!

Hi! I am Maddie and I am from Kent. I love crystals, plants, music, and I am really into chakra cleansing. I hike and do yoga during my free time! My major is music education and my dream job is to be an elementary music teacher. I am in a treble ensemble called Bella Voce, a music fraternity called Sigma Alpha Iota, and Nafme!
