A Single Girl’s Need for Fictional Characters

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

There are certain things that a girl needs to survive when there isn’t a man in her life: great friends, good wine, and an extensive cable TV package are all included in that list of necessities. On a Friday night, when all of your taken friends go out on their dinner dates and sleepovers with their boyfriends, a single girl needs a plan.  There can’t be a Friday that surprises you like this, because you will only end up depressed over the dinner you had to pay for yourself. This is where DVR and a Netflix membership become indispensable.

When reality is getting a little too loveless, its time for imagination to set in and an unhealthy obsession with fictional characters.  Over my years of singleness, I now own every single season of Friends on DVD.  The show for me is an obnoxious addiction; I have lines memorized from every episode of the series. Though I know many would start judging me after hearing that, I needed some sort of hobby while my friends in relationships were off frolicking with their flavor of the week. I know now that Chandler is my soul mate, and I refuse to ever end up with anyone not as entertaining as him.

Every girl has her own fictional man. I’m pretty sure every female in the world, single or not, spent their time wishing a real life Edward or Jacob would appear after the Twilight movies came out.Even though there is no chance of anyone ever finding a charming, adorable, completely romantic vampire, it is at least something we can dream about. In a world with so many disappointing men there needs to be some fictional men we can pretend will come sweep us off our feet someday.
Some of the best Fictional Hotties include:

  1. Noah, The Notebook
  2. Edward and Jacob, Twilight
  3. Mr. Darcy, Pride and Prejudice
  4. Jim Halbert, The Office
  5. Seth Cohen, The OC
  6. McDreamy/Dr. Sheppard, Grey’s Anatomy
  7. Ezra, Pretty Little Liars
  8. Kappie, Greek
  9. Jerry, PS I Love You
  10. Patrick Verona, 10 Things I Hate About You

Let’s examine this list for a moment: Noah builds a house for Allie just to bring her back into her life. It’s almost too much to believe; even for a movie it is so perfect. Chances of any real man actually living up to these characters are pretty slim. But if there is a man in Athens who is taking note, please refer to previous characters and get in contact with me.

Rebekah Meiser is a senior studying Magazine Journalism at Ohio University, with a split specialization in Italian and Art History. Like many Italians, she is obnoxiously proud of her heritage and fully embraces it by consuming embarrassing amounts of pasta, bread and cheese. She currently owes a scary amount of money to the government, but continues to masochistically check Net-a-Porter and Urban Outfitters online for beautiful items that she lusts but cannot afford. Rebekah goes to school in the middle of some of the best cornfields in Ohio. Although she finds the location less than ideal, she has become an avid star-gazer thanks to the unpolluted sky. A true lover of fashion, her friends make fun of her for playing dress up as often as she does, but she’s not one to be discouraged. Rebekah also loves to run (read: alternate between jogging and walking), read fashion blogs, bake, and read magazines (of which she owns a forest-worth). She hopes to live and work in New York City after she graduates in the spring.
