Summer Movies Take 2: 5 Cinema Must-sees, 5 to miss

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

One of my favorite things to do in Athens is going to see movies. Whether it is hitting up the Athena on Court Street for an indie fix, or taking the drive to Athena Grande and Movies 10 in Nelsonville, some of my favorite memories are movie nights with my best girlfriends. I’m already pumped for the summer movie line up. So here’s my top 5 must see and top 5 must miss movies for this summer.

Must See:
1.     Green Lantern(June 17): Oh, Ryan Reynolds. Is there any movie genre this man can’t pull off? Highly doubtful. Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, a test pilot who is given a green ring and powers to keep peace and save the universe. Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) co-stars as Reynolds’ love interest.

2.     Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2(July 15): I feel like my childhood is ending. For 13 years my life has kind of revolved around Harry, Ron and Hermione.  From being my favorite book to swooning over Daniel Radcliffe, we’ve basically grown up with these characters and actors. Will Harry finally beat Voldemort? Will Ron and Hermione finally get together? Will Helena Bonham Carter scare the crap out of us again? I’m counting the hours until the midnight showing.

3.     Crazy, Stupid, Love(July 29): Just the cast list is getting me excited. Steve Carrell, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling star in this rom-com. Gosling coaches Carrell in the ways of being a ladies’ man while trying to win over Stone, his perfect girl.

4.     One Day(August 19): Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess are Emma and Dexter, college friends who complete each other. The trailer features the stunning Hathaway in a nerd look rivaling her Princess Diaries’days and Jim Sturgess looking cleaned up from Across the Universe. Based on the book by David Nicholls, this romance is already making my heart skip a beat and my eyes tear up.

5.     Bad Teacher(June 24): Cameron Diaz is a raunchy junior high teacher in this sure to be hilarious summer flick. Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother) and Justin Timberlake co-star. What else is there to be said? The trailer shows Cameron Diaz hurling a dodge ball at Gibby fromiCarly. I don’t need to see anymore, give me my ticket.

Must Miss:
1.     Final Destination 5 (August 12): Really? I thought death/fate finally got those stupid kids. I have Final Destination to thank for my fears of roller coasters, tanning beds and large semi-trucks. Skip this film and save yourself fears of laser eye surgery and bridges. Alternative: Final Destination. Thrillers just aren’t what they used to be, and thriller sequels are a bad idea.

2.     Fright Night (August 19): Another vampire movie combined with Not-Another-Teen-Movie. Charley (Anton Yelchin) thinks his new neighbor Jerry (Colin Farell) is a vampire and responsible for the string of recent deaths in his hometown. When I first saw the trailer during Saturday Night Live last weekend I thought it was a bad SNL joke trailer. I can’t really figure out if this is supposed to be a comedy or a thriller. Alternative: Twilight.

3.     ZooKeeper(July 8): Does everyone remember the glory days of Happy Madison? Adam Sandler’s hilarious production company that came out with hits such as Big Daddy, Water boy, the Wedding Singer, and 50 First Dates? Well, now they’re exploring the world of talking animals! Kevin James plays a zookeeper who wants to quit his job and his animal buddies start talking in order to get him to stay. Alternative: Grown Ups. All the same actors, but this one won’t give you nightmares of talking gorillas.

4.     The Smurfs(July 29): The only reason I would see this movie is because Katy Perry is the voice of Smurfette. I mean, I love reliving my childhood as much as the next person, but The Smurfsmight be a bit of a stretch. Alternative: Alvin and the Chipmunks. You get the cute animation, childhood characters, and a great cast (Justin Long, ladies?)

5.     30 Minutes or Less(August 12): Jessie Eisenberg is a pizza deliveryman who gets kidnapped, has a bombed strapped to his chest and is forced to rob a bank. Eisenberg, who was recently nominated for an Oscar for his role as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, would be the only reason to see this film. Danny McBride, Pineapple Express, and Nick Swardson, Reno 911!, co-star as Eisenberg’s kidnappers. The problem I see with this film is the mash up of elements: comedy, action, thrill… just too much. Alternative: try a different film from these actors. Pineapple Express, Zombieland, orBlades of Glory.

Hillary Johns is a Senior at Ohio University majoring in magazine journalism in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, with a split specialization in French and sociology. She is beyond excited to be a part of the Her Campus Team! She can often be found with her nose stuck in a book, most likely Harry Potter, or writing her own adventures. Hillary has a deep love of travelling and her favorite place in the world in Boston, MA. She hopes to someday pursue a career in communications and journalism.
Rebekah Meiser is a senior studying Magazine Journalism at Ohio University, with a split specialization in Italian and Art History. Like many Italians, she is obnoxiously proud of her heritage and fully embraces it by consuming embarrassing amounts of pasta, bread and cheese. She currently owes a scary amount of money to the government, but continues to masochistically check Net-a-Porter and Urban Outfitters online for beautiful items that she lusts but cannot afford. Rebekah goes to school in the middle of some of the best cornfields in Ohio. Although she finds the location less than ideal, she has become an avid star-gazer thanks to the unpolluted sky. A true lover of fashion, her friends make fun of her for playing dress up as often as she does, but she’s not one to be discouraged. Rebekah also loves to run (read: alternate between jogging and walking), read fashion blogs, bake, and read magazines (of which she owns a forest-worth). She hopes to live and work in New York City after she graduates in the spring.
