Books, Movies, and Musicals. What do they have in common? Amazing Quotes.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OK State chapter.

I love getting to invest in stories. There are many reasons for this, but one of the best are the quotes. These imaginary characters seem to understand me on a level many others don’t. One of my favorite things about these characters are their one liner’s that make you think. I decided today that I would list some of my favorites. These are by no means all of my favorites, and they aren’t in any order, but here are some of them. For these quotes, I’m only looking at movies, books, and musicals. I hope you enjoy.

P.S. Sometimes I can’t figure out exactly which character said it but I will put titles and authors.

10. I’m a big tough girl. I can tie my own sandals and everything.

                    -Megara

                    -Disney’s Hercules

I like this one because Meg was one of the first Disney princesses that didn’t need a man in her life. Now technically, she’s not a princess, but she is in my heart. She is independent, snarky, and a lot of fun in the movie. Sure, she got the man in the end, but she was also perfectly capable on her own. Minus being indentured to Hades.

9. I finally got some sense knocked into me… and I’ve got the bump to prove it.

https://media.giphy.com/media/T73WQHNVqGL1m/giphy.gif

                    -Simba

                    -The Lion King

Let us girls all admit one thing. We all had a crush on Simba. He was everyone’s favorite missing Disney prince. His whole arch in the story was beautifully scripted. I liked this line because it’s simple, light, but means something. It also reminds me that learning sometimes hurts, but I am better because of it.

8. I’m surrounded by idiots.

                -Scar

                -The Lion King

I had to put these back to back. Scar has to be my favorite Disney villain of all time. I think it’s his sarcasm. This quote is light-hearted and funny. But as I think about it, it has an important meaning as well. Sometimes we have to be in the company of people we don’t like. We have to deal with them. It’s just a fact of life. Of course, we should probably handle it better than Scar, but it’s important none the less.

7. With great power, comes great need to take a nap. Wake me up later.

https://media.giphy.com/media/GQkfACdeneh56/giphy.gif

                -Nico Di Angelo

-Percy Jackson and the Olympians; The Last Olympian

                -Rick Riordan

Nico is such a great character. He goes through so much but still powers on and helps the ones he cares for. When most people hear the “with great powers” quote they think of Spiderman. But I think of Nico. He may be a powerful character in the Percy Jackson books, but he knows when it’s time to rest up. I solidly empathize with him as a college student.

6. If my life is going to mean anything, I have to live it myself.

                -Percy Jackson

-Percy Jackson and the Olympians; The Lightning Theif

                -Rick Riordan

Many might consider Percy a seaweed brain, but he has more wisdom than people give him credit for. The first time I read this, I just had to sit there in silence for five minutes. I don’t think I have to explain why it’s so important. It just is.

5. I used to dream about escaping my ordinary life, but my life was never ordinary. I had simply failed to notice how extraordinary it was.

https://media.giphy.com/media/3o7TKC4dthuwLh6Be8/giphy.gif

-Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children

                -Ransom Riggs

I don’t remember much about this book. It was great, don’t get me wrong. But it didn’t stay with me as some books do. But these two sentences from the book come to mind quite often. It reminds me that we all assume we have lives that could be better. We don’t like the hand we are given and are dissatisfied. However, if we could only take a closer look, we would see how fortunate we are.

4. Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light.

https://media.giphy.com/media/AOrThUuuOoDCg/giphy.gif

                -Dumbledore

                -The Prisoner of Azkaban

                -J.K. Rowling

Obviously, Dumbledore would make an appearance on this list. He always knew more than he let on. But on occasion, he would bestow on the young wizards and witches bits of golden advice to keep with them for the rest of their life. He gave wisdom for generations.

3. Legacy. What is a legacy? It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.

https://media.giphy.com/media/Fwhzcum5O2RKo/giphy.gif

                -Alexander Hamilton

                -Lin Manuel Miranda

The musical Hamilton sells out faster than you can blink. You basically have to purchase tickets two years in advance. Which basically means I haven’t gotten to see it in real life. Who would’ve thought a musical about a founding father would be such a hit? But it’s amazing. This line is one that gets you to stop in your tracks. It reminds us that sometimes we won’t see the fruits of our labor. But others will when we are gone. They will see what we left behind. I hope I leave a legacy worth being proud of. I’m going to try.

2. Life is too short for half-hearted connections and meaningless run-throughs.

https://media.giphy.com/media/mgXOd4qLtnk88/giphy.gif

                -Cody Coleman

                -Take Two

                -Karen Kingsbury

I don’t think about this quote often enough. Karen Kingsbury has a way of showing me what God wants me to know. Cody Coleman is a character that gets the short end of the stick one too many times. But through it all, he triumphs over his struggles. He has God and his loved ones. He is much wiser than I. I try to take his words into account when I can. Life is short. We need to be intentional with our relationships.

1. This last year… I learned something about family. Like it’s not about blood alone. It’s being connected… It’s growing up together and loving each other. It’s believing in the same God and knowing you’d do anything for the person across from you at dinner.

https://media.giphy.com/media/l41m0igSFBarPdxBu/giphy.gif

                -Coming Home

                -Karen Kingsbury

I’m not sure which character gets to say these lines. But they are powerful none the less. A family is given by God and is one of the most precious things in this world. Sure, some are a bit broken. None of them are perfect. Sometimes family doesn’t come by blood, but by the people who love you. But regardless of all of that. Family matters. There will be struggles, but a family is there to help.

I hope you enjoyed these quotes. I know I had fun reminiscing. I hope you all have a great day.
