Last November, the Oklahoma State chapter of Alpha phi Alpha hosted its first Miss Black and Gold pageant since returning to the campus. Four lovely women competed, but by the time the votes were counted and all the performances were finished, only one was left standing.  Triana Browne, a freshman at OSU, was named the 2011-2012 Miss Black and Gold. Learn a little more about her and how she got started in the pageant world.
Â
1. What is your year and major at OSU?
I am a freshman here at OSU possibly managing in either sports media or exercise ad nutrition. My main focus will be directed toward athletics.
Â
2. Where are you from?
I was born in Tulsa, Okla., but I moved to Peachtree City, Georgia graduated from high school and moved back to Oklahoma.Â
Â
3. What are your career goals?
My career goals involve me working as a broadcaster on Sportscenter. The business is very competitive and will take years of experience. However, another plan is being a trainer for a major trainer for an athletic team.Â
4. Â When did you start doing pageants?
I first started doing pageants my sophomore year in high school. My acting coach thought I should try it out being that I was new and wanted to meet more students that enjoyed acting and singing as much as I did. The pageant went very well for my first time ever competing. I was the only underclassman to place. After the pageant, about two weeks later I was called over the intercom in the school and had to go to the office. What ended up happening was that the judges were trying to get a hold of me because they thought I had Miss America potential. I did not know that they were trainers and coaches involved in The Miss America Scholarship Pageant because I had never imagined competing in major pageants and since then I’ve been attached to the stage.Â
5. Â Why did you decide to do pageants?
I chose to be involved in pageants at the time because I was new to Georgia and wanting to branch out to new experiences. I thought, I’m in a new state, I get a new start and this is how I am going to do it. I wanted to perform more and get out of my comfort zone. I had never pictured myself being in pageants but these judges saw potential and I was going to take advantage of that and do everything I needed to do to be successful.Â
6. When did you hear about OSU’s Miss Black and Gold’s Pageant.Â
a.    I was actually sitting in Kerr-Drummond and I think it may have been Darryl Wells who said something to me about it to me. I honestly can’t remember, I have a horrible memory sometimes, but someone mentioned it to me and wrote me on Facebook.
7. Â Why did you decide to compete in the pageant?
I was first involved in the Miss OSU pageant but due to some residency rules, I wasn’t capable of competing this year. I had already heard of this one so of course I was going to do it.Â
8. Â What did it feel like when you won?
I think for anyone they would be happy to hear their name called. I know that I was extremely surprised and ecstatic. I was only a freshman and honestly wasn’t expecting to hear my name, but I knew that I could handle the responsibility the title held.Â
9. Â What is your platform and how do you plan to implement it?
My platform is Heart-To-Heart Healthy Living Healthy Lives. The main focus of this is addressing a healthier lifestyle at a young age in order for it to benefit you in later years. However, I want to make it interesting and enjoyable so I bring in activities like Jump Rope for Heart, and Basketball Hoops. I plan to implement it by going to surrounding schools and talking to kids bout being healthy and creating campus wide activities for college students to be involved in such as walk/runs and tournaments.
