There’s been a lot of buzz about sulfate in your shampoo and how harmful it is. Until recently it was hard to find a shampoo without the stuff, but now popular brands are selling “sulfate-free” editions for just a few dollars more. Honestly though, mainstream shampoo brands were late to the game because people were still buying their products. Dropping one chemical harmful for your hair doesn’t mean they won’t keep others around until shoppers hear about them.

If it’s desire for healthy hair that led you to the purchase, don’t buy sulfate-free shampoo from just anywhere. What did they replace the chemical with? What makes your shampoo foam and lather just right? The ingredients list can seem intimidating, with the amount of research necessary to fully understand what it is and if there’s a better substitute. There’s always a better substitute, it’s just too expensive for them to use and distribute at a decent price.

Have no fear! Alternative shampoos with natural ingredients do exist, do clean your hair and do stay in your price budget. For around $10 a bottle, popular grocery chains sell organic sulfate-free shampoos whose other ingredients are also good for your hair! There are often found with cocoa and shea butters, lotions, organic soap bars and hair conditioning treatments. This section is just not in the shampoo aisle.

Look through the beauty section in a grocery store, the organic and natural products are often sectioned between makeup and bath essentials. Here there are a few options of healthy hair products like shampoos and conditioners that are more than just sulfate or paraben free. Organic grocery stores that have a beauty section also have a wider array of healthier products, with a few inexpensive options. It’s not that much more expensive to buy better products and treat your hair, it’s just less in-your-face and accessible as with popular brands.
