Rebel Football Roundup

By: Ryan Schmelz

Last week, the Ole Miss Rebels fell short of upset in a 41-35 loss to LSU in Death Valley. LSU running back Jeremy Hill scored his third touchdown of the game with 15 seconds remaining to give the Tigers the lead. The Rebels moved to 5 and 6 with one game left to play, the Egg Bowl. Bo Wallace threw for 310 yards with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Wallace was a key aspect in the running game as the Rebels used the quarterback option effectively throughout the game. Wallace led with 53 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jeff Scott, Randall Mackey, and Barry Brunetti combined for 95 yards and a score off of 29 carries. Twice Ole Miss defensive back Senquez Golson picked off Zach Mettenberger. LSU countered with 145 yards on the ground and 4 rushing touchdowns. This is the third fourth quarter heartbreak the Rebels have had this season. Maybe these losses have for-shadowed the season coming down to the Egg Bowl for the Rebels.

The Ole Miss Rebels put the Mississippi State Bulldog’s back to the Dog House in 41-24 blowout this past Saturday at the Egg Bowl in Oxford, MS. Only destiny would have the Rebels lose 3 heartbreaking games then to win and become bowl eligible against archrivals Mississippi State.  The Ole Miss Rebel will be bowling in their first season under Hugh Freeze, finishing their season 6 and 6. Donte Moncrief had 7 receptions for 173 yards and 3 touchdowns as Bo Wallace was 15-for-22 with 294 yards and a career high 5 touchdown passes. The Rebels went into halftime tied 17-to-17 against the Bulldogs. Bryson Rose broke the tie early in the second half with a 41-yard touchdown run. This was just the beginning of 4 unanswered touchdowns for the Rebels offense. After Wallace took a knee with the final score 41-24, the fans charged the field to celebrate their Egg Bowl victory and first season of bowl eligibility in 3 years.
