5 Reasons Why I Deleted My Tinder

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oneonta chapter.

I remember hearing about Tinder during my first semester at SUCO. The concept immediately entertained me: swipe through a deck of men based on my location and age preferences, and if they like me too then we will match, and we can message one another.

I remember the night I made my account with a roommate. We swiped through guys for hours, pausing to show each other guys who were hot, not so hot, or any funny bios or pictures. Within the first hour we started matching with guys, and that’s when the adrenaline rush hit me: a guy who I was interested in saw me, and actually swiped right!

That might sound funny to some of you, who are confident and expect that kind of recognition from a man, but I have struggled with insecurities all of my life, and matching with guys on Tinder gave me a genuine confidence boost. Men were actually interested in me based on my appearance. Thinking about that fact now, it’s probably the reason I started using Tinder on a semi-regular basis.

I went through the decks I was dealt on Tinder for a year and a half, swiping left and right to find my potential matches. I was never looking for a boyfriend, or a hookup, or even a friend. I just found it fun to swipe. Though my use for Tinder was harmless, I recently decided to delete my account. No, it’s not because I’m dating anyone.

Here are the 5 reasons why I deleted my Tinder account:

1. Most guys on Tinder are just looking to hookup, and would send me inappropriate messages.

2. The times I have met guys from Tinder have been awkward because of the transition from talking on the app to actually talking in person because guess what? People are not exactly like the way they text, plus their messages can be misunderstood.

3. I was recognized by a stranger once who swiped right for me, and asked if I had seen him in my deck yet… Yeah, it was one of the weirdest experiences in my life. I can guarantee that will never happen again since I have deleted my Tinder.

4. I would typically swipe or check my account after eating dinner when I should have been doing homework. I would waste my time on there, and end up having to stay up even later those nights to get my assignments done that were due the following morning.

5. I only use Tinder as a form of amusement and I am tired of the drawbacks of that, so honestly it isn’t the app for me. I can be entertained by the people I meet in person, not on an app.

So there you have it, my 5 reasons why I decided to delete my Tinder. Everyone has different reasons for using the app, and I am not trashing it by any means. If you wanna hookup with guys, swipe to find your Mr. Right for the night! If you’re looking for a boyfriend, still swipe, but you might have a harder time finding that special someone.

Next time you go to swipe, consider your reasons for using or deleting Tinder… you just might be surprised.
