If you’re anything like me, my hair just seemed to get greasier and greasier, no matter what I did to it. It got even worse after coming to school this past August, to the point where I would dread doing my hair or leaving my dorm in fear that people would judge what my hair looked like. I’ve done my research, because I didn’t understand why my hair was doing this, but the number one thing I found out was that people just happen to have more oils in their scalp than others, and that’s where the “greasiness” comes from. If this is you, don’t panic! Just because you have more oils in your scalp doesn’t mean you can’t control the way it makes your hair look. After trying these five things out, I was able to control the greasiness, and my hair confidence is now back to normal!
1. Don’t wash it every day!
I thought this was the way to not have greasy hair, but I was wrong! If you wash your hair every day, you risk stripping the natural oils out of your hair, leaving you to produce even more oils than before. Wash your hair every other day, while it can be hard, it is doable. This is a big step in getting your hair back to looking healthy again.
2. Head and Shoulders Shampoo
Granted, at the time I was fixing the grease, I was having dry scalp issues, but the Head and Shoulders Instant Oil Control helped me tremendously. The mango and citrus in the shampoo helps to clean your scalp and remove any flakes and oil.
3. Stop Using Heat
For someone who doesn’t like her natural hair, this was so hard for me. I used to straighten my hair almost every day and by five pm my hair would become greasy, without fail. After stopping heat and only doing my hair every once in a while, it has helped my hair a lot. My hair was able to breathe, and I allowed my hair to dry naturally. I now rarely straighten my hair, and I’m starting to come up with new ways to style it without heat, and I’ve started appreciating it more. Oh, and if you do use heat, use a protectant before you start!
4. Stop Touching your Hair
I have to admit, I’m very guilty of doing this! I know that you shouldn’t touch your hair, especially your scalp, but sometimes you just can’t help it. When you touch your scalp, you’re transferring the oils on your hands to your hair, making your hair even greasier. So really try to avoid doing so, also, it’s just a bad habit!
5. Shower in the Morning
Sometimes switching your showers from at night to the morning is the biggest change you can make. This way, after your shower you don’t fall asleep on your damp hair, not allowing your hair to fully dry. When you shower in the morning, and go on with your day, your hair is bound to look healthier and you’re most likely to have a better hair day without all of the kinks from your night’s sleep!
These five things are all things that have helped me with my greasy hair, and I hope it helps you as well. While you won’t see results right away, they’ll surely come. I know it can be hard to wait for something, but it will come gradually, just be patient, and trust the process!
