After finally adjusting to college life and truly enjoying it, another bump in the road hit. Last December was when it all started. I was constantly tired, not very hungry, losing weight, and having trouble concentrating. These symptoms continued and got worse around February, when I finally went to the doctor for some answers. I was initially treated for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) but when something was still off, it was time for bloodwork. My thyroid levels ended up coming out three times the normal level. This explained the tiredness and pretty much the rest of my symptoms. I started a gluten-free diet shortly after, as I discovered a gluten intolerance during the process. The next few months consisted mainly of doctor’s appointments and medicine trials.
After several dosing changes, I finally started to feel better towards the end of the summer. Yes, symptoms can come and go, but I am overall feeling better. I am working to gain the weight back and truly just take care of myself. Being away at college definitely made this time even harder, but I am lucky enough to only be a little over an hour away from home. I could never have gotten through without my mom though. She was at every appointment with me and keeping track of my symptoms, medicines and progress. This whole situation made me realize how lucky I am to have such a supportive family that is willing to do anything they can to help me.
A main lesson I learned through dealing with this health issue was that it could always be worse. Whenever we are going through something it seems as though we don’t think anything could be worse. But it always can. I was lucky enough to be able to take care of myself while being away and stay in school while keeping my grades up. I AM EXTREMELY LUCKY. I now take my health much more seriously and watch my diet carefully. Yes, this was a scary time, but it taught me so much.
I am now feeling much better than I did last December. My thyroid levels are staying pretty normal with the help of my medicine. I work daily to feed my body the right foods and keep on top of my water intake. Now that I know how it feels to be healthy, I always want to feel that way. I am so very grateful for the progress I have made and being able to return to my daily routine. I found my true friends during the process and leaned on my family for support. I can’t thank them enough for their prayers and help. For my family and friends reading this, THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING. Lastly, to everyone out there struggling with a health problem, know that your loved ones have your back and you can get through it.
