Have you ever realized that after being around rain and gloom for awhile you start to feel a little down and depressed? This is called seasonal affective disorder (SAD), or what I like to call, the winter funk. Instead of sitting around and moping, try some of these activities that will help you to feel like yourself again.
1. Going on a hike
It may be rainy and foggy out, but sometimes being active and taking it all in can really have a positive effect on a person. Here in Eugene, a good place to try is the Terwilliger Hot Springs. This is an area that requires a hike up in a foresty area that leads to a natural hot spring. It is like a jacuzzi in the middle of the forest and is extremely relaxing and exciting.
2. Stay underneath a sun lamp
A sun lamp is a box that emits full spectrum light that is similar to actual sunlight. This is called light therapy and seems to actually be effective. The University of Oregon does have a room where one can go and use one of these if you are feeling down.
3. Take a trip to the gym
Although this does not seem too appealing to some people, going to the gym and doing cardio/aerobic excerise can really boost one’s energy level and bring your spirits up. People who have a healthier lifestlye and are active are happier people, even when there is no sun shining.
4. Go to a basketball game
What better way to cheer yourself up than getting in the school spirirt? Grab some friends and enjoy sitting back and watching your school play in a game.
