A Girl’s Guide to Hosting a Super Bowl Party

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

Who doesn’t love a fun Sunday party? Wait…Sunday? Yes. In fact, if you’ve been looking for an excuse to throw a party, this Sunday may be the perfect chance. Super Bowl XLVII has arrived and will begin with kickoff at 3:30p.m. (PT) on CBS. So take the chance and invite over your closest friends, their friends and that guy that sits next to you in your Writing 121 class. Once the guest list is complete, it’s time to prepare a couple appetizers that will make your reputation as the Ultimate Party Host skyrocket. Here are two great ideas for simple and flavor-filled appetizers.

Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers (recipe from food.com):

  • 10 fresh jalapenos
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 10 pieces thin-sliced bacon, cut in half
  1. Cut jalapenos in half and remove seeds and veins. (Use gloves to work with peppers).
  2. Fill jalapenos with cream cheese and wrap a slice of bacon around each one.
  3. Secure with a toothpick.
  4. Bake at 425 degrees until bacon appears to be done, about 15-20 minutes.

Guacamole and Gluten-Free Chips (recipe from allrecipes.com):

  • 2 avocados
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 ripe tomato, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 bag of Juanita’s Corn Tortillas chips (gluten-free)
  1. Peel and mash avocados in a medium-serving bowl.
  2. Stir in onion, garlic, tomato, lime juice, salt and pepper.
  3. Season with remaining lime juice and salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Chill for half an hour to blend flavors

Make sure to prepare the snacks before everyone arrives. Start out serving the guacamole and then get the oven preheating at the start of the 2nd quarter. This way, the jalapeno poppers will be ready for those halftime munchies. Watching the football game with friends can leave some of us feeling like information have-nots. So knowing a bit about what is actually going on during the football game is always helpful for staying in the loop.

Here are some basic details to know for Sunday:

  • Who: San Francisco 49ers vs. Baltimore Raven
  • Where: Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Names and Faces: The two coaches, Jim Harbaugh (49ers) vs. John Harbaugh (Ravens), are brothers. Ray Lewis, #52 (Ravens), is one of the greatest linebackers of all time and after 17 years of playing in the NFL this will be his last game ever. Colin Kaepernick, #7 (49ers), is playing his first year as a starting quarterback and has created the craze of “Kaepernicking” which consists of a posing while kissing your bicep.
  • Halftime Performance: Beyonce, and rumored guests Jay-Z and Destiny’s Child reunion

Friends invited, check. Delicious and easy recipes, check. Fun football facts, check. Now all that’s left is to choose who you hope to win. So sit back, relax and enjoy the party.
