No More Gnarly Nails! Choose Shatter by Katy Perry

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

That’s right, ladies, it’s about that time. We’re finally breaking out our sandals and peep-toed shoes! The thing is, I tend to neglect my poor little toes in the winter months, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. Now that spring has arrived, it’s time that we give our toes (and fingers) a little TLC, so we can own those gladiators and work those Rainbows. Lucky for you all, my best friend made the greatest discovery known to womankind a few weeks ago: Katy Perry’s Shatter nail polish by O.P.I. It’s so fun and easy, I’m addicted – and once you try it, you will be too! The way it works is that the glossy black polish shrinks as it dries onto your nail, breaking away from itself and thus giving your nails a very cool, chic cracked look. The best part is that it’s super easy, but it looks like it couldn’t possibly have been done anywhere other than a nail salon!

To apply Shatter, all you need to do is paint your nails the way you normally would with one or two coats of colored polish. I highly recommend vibrant colors; they stand out way better against the black. Once that dries, paint a light coat of Shatter over it, and watch with fascination as your nails transform into artwork right before your eyes!

I’ve experimented quite a bit with Shatter because I’m so obsessed with it, and I’ve discovered that it’s best to go with bright colors, and even better to use bright colors that have some sheen or sparkle in them. My current favorite is Sephora’s Go With the Flow-er by O.P.I. It’s a beautiful hot pink (it’s not as red as it looks in the picture) ribboned with fine glitter, and it looks absolutely stunning against Shatter. Any bright colors look fantastic with it, but since it’s a very matte color, it’s important to use a glossy topcoat, so that your nail has consistent sheen. Luckily, it’s practically impossible to go wrong with Shatter, so break out your nail clippers, file, and polish remover, and get to work making those sweet feet sandal-worthy!

A University of Oregon junior and San Francisco native, Charmaine Ng loves authentic noodle dishes and will always opt for Asian and Italian cuisine when pressed to choose a restaurant. She is a self-proclaimed "noodler," someone who uses her noodle to collaborate with others and bring big ideas to life. She interns for a student-run full-service ad agency, blogs for a wedding and event planning company, and runs the UO Muggle Quidditch League. In her spare time, she sleeps, and sleeps, and sleeps - and dabbles in social media and blogging, her two biggest passions. Her quirkiness isn't apparent at first, but then she starts talking about packaging design and making funny faces, and you wonder what happened to that shy Asian girl you first met. With ambition bursting beyond the campus walls, Charmaine can't wait to graduate and work for an agency, company, or publication in community outreach efforts using social media.
