Ernest Hemingway once said that a story could be told in 6 words. His were “For sale: Baby shoes, never worn”. From this 6-word sentence, any story can be interpreted from it. NPR’s Michele Norris leads “The Race Card Project” using Hemingway’s method. This project allows people to send in their own 6-worded sentence of their experiences with race. The aim of the project was to initiate the conversation of race, ethnicity, and cultural identity in America. Once she started this, she received a flood of entries. People can send their submit their sentences by email, postal mail, Twitter, and Facebook.

Norris came last week to speak at the University of Oregon. Students, community members, and faculty were welcomed to attend. However not everyone got those free tickets. Fortunately there were view rooms to see a live stream of the talk. Norris coming to the University was a part of University of Oregon’s project, “Exploring Identity”. This is a yearlong project of the community to engage in discussion about race and identity.
