Say Hello To The Best Hulu Originals To Watch

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

Between all of the movie and TV screening websites, I have always been a Hulu user (mostly because I use my cousins account and I don’t want to pay for one). Everyone knows about the award winning Netflix originals such as Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why, and Black Mirror. But what we should really be focusing on, are Hulu Originals. A lot of Netflix’s programs have been transferred over to Hulu like How I Met Your Mother and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (my two personal favorites). So, if you have been feeling tired of Netflix and want something new to watch, here are some amazing originals to watch on Hulu:

The Path

If you have a strange interest in learning about cults like I do, then this is the show for you. The Path “follows Eddie Lane (Aaron Paul) and his family at the center of a controversial cult movement (Meyerism) as they struggle with relationships, faith and power. Each episode takes an in-depth look at the gravitational pull of belief and what it means to choose between the life we live and the life we want. The series blends elements of mystery-thriller, romance and the supernatural.” (Hulu). This show shows you what its like to be in a religious group that you consider a lifestyle, and the rest of the world considers a cult. It is drama filled and always incredibly entertaining.

The Handmaid’s Tale

I cannot even begin to describe how amazing this show is. If you enjoy fun light hearted shows then I would suggest finding something else to watch. The Handmaid’s Tale had me gasping and crying various times throughout the first season. “Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values’. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.” (Hulu). The series just won a Golden Globe for the best drama TV series, and Season 2 just came out on April 25th (I’m already in love).

The Mindy Project

Honestly, who doesn’t love Mindy Kaling?! “A single-camera comedy, starring Mindy Kaling, that follows a skilled OB/GYN navigating the tricky waters of both her personal and professional life, as she pursues her dreams of becoming the perfect woman, finding the perfect man and getting her perfect romantic comedy ending.” (Hulu). This show is guaranteed to make you smile, no matter what mood you’re in.

Chance

If you missed Hugh Laurie from House, then you’re in luck. You can watch him in this Hulu series as a, “San Francisco-based forensic neuropsychiatrist who reluctantly gets sucked into a violent and dangerous world of mistaken identity, police corruption and mental illness. After an ill-advised decision regarding an alluring patient who may or may not be struggling with a multiple personality disorder, Chance finds himself in the crosshairs of her abusive spouse, who also happens to be a ruthless police detective. In over his head, Chance’s descent into the city’s shadowy underbelly, all while navigating the waters of a contentious divorce and the tribulations of his teenage daughter, soon spirals into an ever deepening exploration of one of mankind’s final frontiers—the shadowy, undiscovered country of the human mind.” (Hulu).

The Looming Tower

This series however is not officially out yet, but looks very interesting. “Based on the Pulitzer-Prize winning book, The Looming Tower traces the rising threat of Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda in the late 1990s and how the rivalry between the FBI and CIA during that time may have inadvertently set the path for the tragedy of 9/11. The series follows members of the I-49 Squad in New York and Alec Station in Washington, D.C., the counter-terrorism divisions of the FBI and CIA, respectively, as they travel the world fighting for ownership of information while seemingly working toward the same goal—trying to prevent an imminent attack on U.S. soil.” (Hulu). The series officially came out on February 28th, 2018.
