Alexa Marciniak: Involved and In Charge at OSU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

Alexa Marciniak is a sophomore Marketing major at OSU. Not only does she balance the stresses of being a transfer student but she also finds time to play on the womens club lacrosse team and be an active member in her business fraternity, Pi Sigma Epsilon. You can also find Alexa working or working out at the ARC! Alexa dishes out advice for other students wishing to succeed at OSU.

HC: How have you handled the transition from Toledo to Ohio State?

AM: The transition from Toledo to Ohio State has been so smooth. I live with four friends from high school so that has helped me feel very at home here. I think the curriculum and style of teaching here is a bit more difficult, and I’m still adjusting to those changes. But overall, I know that I made the correct decision in transferring schools.

HC: How do you balance school, work and being on a sports team?

AM: Sometimes I still ask myself how and why I have a job and play a sport and attend class. I think I would go crazy if I wasn’t so busy. In high school I learned to balance time between my school work and extra curricular activities, and that helped me form good patterns today. I organize my time wisely and hate myself when I am late so I believe that is what keeps me motivated. Prioritizing is another big thing. We are here to get an education, so that always has to come first!

HC: Tell us about your experience in PSE and how it’s helped you within Fisher?

AM: Joining Pi Sigma Epsilon has been the best decision I’ve made in my college career so far, and I believe it will always be my best decision. I get butterflies just thinking about PSE! I am so thankful for all of the friendships I have made through PSE, and know that they’re friendships that are here to stay. I’ve been honored to join the Public Relations Committee, and from that I have gotten to become even closer with some of the members. Being in one of the business fraternities in Fisher has helped me network greatly. I will be a PSE Gamma Nu for the rest of my life, and that can’t do anything except for help me in the business world!

HC: How do you find time to still have a stellar social life?

AM: A stellar social life is not exactly what I would call it, but the way I see it is if I didn’t get out there and join multiple organizations (and not sleep at night), I would just be a number at this ginormous university. Now, after joining PSE and Club Lacrosse, I have so many people I can count on. Not to mention there is always something fun and exciting going on between the two! I really just push myself to get my assignments done early when I know there’s an event coming up, so I don’t have to worry about it when I’m there. I said earlier that we are here to get an education, and I mean that, but we are also here to make friendships and memories that last a lifetime!

HC: What advice would you give to other transfer students or students wishing to come to OSU?

AM: The main piece of advice I would give to other transfer students coming to Ohio State is to go to the activity fair and find something you are passionate about. The hardest part about joining a new group is attending those first couple “informational” meetings, but after that, it’s smooth sailing and you are hanging out with new best friends that you may have never encountered had you not forced yourself to look decent and go watch a PowerPoint for 20 minutes. Another thing I would say to them is start drinking a lot of black coffee.

HC: What are some of your goals you hope to accomplish during your time at OSU?

AM: I’m still trying to figure out my goals are while here at Ohio State. Some of my short term goals are to become a member of the Exec Board for Pi Sigma Epsilon because they have already done so much for me. Another thing I’m working on is taking every travel opportunity I’m given while here at OSU. When is the next time I’m going to be able to go to Boulder, Colorado and Miami, Florida with 25+ other students? The difficult part with that is having enough money, so I also hope to obtain some sweet internships while I’m here, which Fisher is awesome at helping with!Â
