Got a Date and a Tight Budget? Five Affordable Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day at OSU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

‘Tis the season of love! As the calendar countdown approaches February 14th, you might find yourself frantically scrolling through Pinterest boards for last-minute gift inspo or clicking away on Macy’s online store for romantic discounted goods. Your finger hovers over the purchase button when you remember that college is the world’s greatest wallet-drainer. While a bouquet of freshly-cut roses, a box of gourmet chocolates and a dazzling pendant are classic ways to express your love, affordable on- or near-campus dates are just as memorable.

Here are just a few ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your beau at Ohio State:

1. Stargaze at Mirror Lake

Take a walk around the river with your lover at night and pick out the constellations (or, if you’re woefully uneducated about astrology, like me, play connect-the-dots with the stars). Better yet, you’ll be surrounded by the string lights still up from Christmas. Simple, free and exceptionally romantic, this is your chance to make your rom-com dreams come true!

2. Ice-skate at OSU Ice Rink.

If you’d like to try your hand at Olympic sports, there is no better opportunity to do so! Whether you’re an ice-skating prodigy or absolute novice, a time together on the ice is sure to be an exhilarating and unforgettable date (especially if you continuously fall over as I do every time). Pair the experience with some hot chocolate and sweet treats and you’ll have yourself a wintery yet cozy Valentine’s!

3. Catch a movie at Gateway Film Center.

As a student, you have access to discount tickets (better known as D-Tix) that offer $3 vouchers for an array of screenings. Share a bag of popcorn and a drink with your partner and you’ll have a classic movie night out. And don’t stop there! For under $30, you might also consider going on food tours and museums all across Columbus.

4. Eat out at a restaurant on High Street.

If there’s one thing High Street is known and loved for, it’s the sheer number of dining options available! Enjoy a homely meal at Moy’s Chinese Restaurant (order the Szechwan chicken and thank me later), Indian cuisine at New Taj Mahal or a casual night out at Donatos Pizza. If you’d prefer a lighter dish, stop by Kung Fu Tea for classic boba or Buckeye Donuts for a sweet treat.

5. Enjoy a picnic on the Oval.

If you don’t fancy dining at restaurants, personalize your meal with a picnic! Pack sandwiches, finger foods and desserts for late-afternoon lunch or early dinner; then, lay back and admire the sunset. Feeling romantic? Put together a Valentine’s-themed playlist and talk the evening away with your partner.

No matter how you choose to spend this Valentine’s season, creating new memories together is the greatest joy of them all. Have fun, be safe and spread the love!
