Madeline’s Music Blog: Guilty Pleasure Playlist

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

So the other day, as I was mourning the loss of summer, I started listening to the LFO song “Summer Girls”—you know, that really terrible ‘90s song by that boy band no one ever remembers (oh wait … that’s the majority of ‘90s music). Anyway, my friend walked into the room and gave me the most disgusted look I’ve seen since my roommate saw me eating a banana dipped in hummus last week. I frantically fumbled around for an explanation, but I just couldn’t find one. I mean, have you ever listened to that song? It has some of the worst lyrics ever penned in the history of music (sample line: “When you take a sip you buzz like a hornet/Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets”). And yet, I keep listening to it. You know why? It’s what I like to call a “guilty pleasure song.” These are the songs we’re embarrassed to say we like; the ones we wouldn’t want anyone to find on our iTunes. To prove I’m not the only one with my own hidden stash, I asked some fellow OSU students what songs they love to hate. Here’s what you told me:

Alex Bartsch, ’15
“You Belong With Me” by Taylor Swift
“I work at Kohl’s so they play that crap all the time. It’s growing on me though. It’s catchy.”

Emma Pachlhofer, ’14
“Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” by Wham!
“It’s cheesy but so catchy. I can’t help singing along.”

Sophia Criminell ’15
“Whiskey Lullaby” by Braid Paisley
“I hate country, but sometimes my roommates and I just get in a mood where we need to listen to it.”

Sam Covalesky ’12
“All My Life” by K-Ci & JoJo
“I jam out to this when no one’s looking. I have a soft spot for ‘90s R&B music. It’s got that ‘90s pop sound and the lyrics are so serious but fun to make fun of.”

Lisa Washington ’14
“Friday” by Rebecca Black
“It’s cool because I like Fridays. No school tomorrow. It’s a funny song.”

Nicholas Maslakowski ’15
“Take Me Home Tonight” by Eddie Money
“I feel like when I go to a party, everyone would be singing that if they could.”

Casey Owens, ’12
“Hey There Delilah” by Plain White T’s
“It’s kind of girly. Don’t tell anyone I like it.”
MR: (sorry, Casey!)

Mukund Srinivas ’15
“Bubbly” by Colbie Caillat
“You can’t hate on that song. It’s sweet. It’s chill. But it’s girly.”

Jen Aneshansley, ’14
“Superbass” by Nicki Minaj
“All I do is pretend that I hate her. I pretend that I’m being her for Halloween as a big joke, but really, I love her.”

Christina Dowdy, ’14
“Only Just Begun” by the Cranberries
“The Cranberries are so old and no one really listens to them. I usually like R&B and pop. It’s so random.”

Allison Mangles, ’15
“Breaking Free” from High School Musical
“It reminds me of when I was a kid. But in college, it’s a little too preteen.”

Charlie Hunter, ’13
“Someone Like You” by Adele
“I can’t stop listening to it. But I wouldn’t want to admit it.”

Molly Vetter, ’14
“No Hands” by Waka Flocka Flame
“I’m more of a laid-back, rock type of person. I never listen to rap, so it’s not expected for me to like it.”

Jess Real, ’15
“Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice
“I like the beat. But I wouldn’t necessarily listen to it in front of my roommate.”

Jenna Haaser, ’14
“Keep Holding On” by the cast of Glee
“It’s incredibly cheesy and so badly staged, but fantastically cheery.”

Devin Turner, ’15
“Love the Way You Lie” by Eminem ft. Rihanna
“I hate that I like it. It’s not like anything I normally listen to.”

Anna Fry, ’14
“Airforce One” by Nelly
“I was obsessed with it in high school and now it’s my go-to song.”

Alexa Lee, ’13
“Living Our Love Song” by Jason Michael Carroll
“I’m so not a country person but I love that song. It’s so tacky. It’s got a gross twangy-ness but it brings a smile to my face.”

Ashanté Hill, ’14
“Not Gonna Get Us” by t.A.T.u.
“It’s so dramatic. It’s very poppy and girly. Not very manly.”

Cameron Adams, ’15
“I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston
“I know the entirety of that song. It’s one of those power ballads that you really shouldn’t know. I also know all the words to the songs in Mamma Mia. I guess that’s pretty bad, isn’t it?”

What’s your guilty pleasure song?Tell me in the comments below! I’m always looking for songs I can dance around to in my underwear while singing into my hairbrush … not that I actually do that. At least, not when my roommates are home.
