Usually, I’m the type of person to listen to music I already love, but every month or so, I come across a new song in a store or on TikTok that I need to add to my Spotify playlist immediately. Kicking off 2024 on a high note, here are seven songs I’ve had on repeat!
- “SUPERCUT” BY LORDE
-
Something about “Supercut” makes me want to get up and dance — it’s at the very top of my list of songs that encapsulate the feeling of being a teenager. Thanks to Lorde, I’m holding onto the last few months of my teens!
- “Morning Sex” by Ralph Castelli
-
The beat, smooth voice and lyrics in “Morning Sex” are perfect for my morning walk to class. Whether folding laundry, scrolling on my phone or eating dinner, this song is the ideal background music for any occasion.
If you’re looking for a more obscure song, this is the one for you! Not many of my friends know of it, but they start bopping their heads to the music every time I play it.
- “Missed Calls” by Mac Miller
-
As a Pittsburgh girl, my playlists are incomplete without at least one Mac Miller song. While I’m a huge fan of his “Swimming” album, the more upbeat “Missed Calls” is even better. It captures the nostalgia I feel between the dead of winter and the arrival of spring — this is a no-skip song on shuffle!
- “End of Beginning” by Djo
-
“End of Beginning” is trending on TikTok, and for good reason with its sad yet comforting lyrics. Bonus points that the voice behind it all is none other than Joe Keery from “Stranger Things.” That’s enough of a selling point for me!
- “Silver Springs” by Fleetwood Mac
-
If you’ve ever seen Stevie Nicks singing “Silver Springs” to her muse, Lindsey Buckingham, then you know why this is such an iconic piece. The tension culminates in the guitar solo of my dreams, a raw 90s angst rare in modern music.
- “Ode to a Conversation Stuck in Your Throat” by Del Water Gap
-
I can’t remember how I discovered this song, but I am so happy I did. I’m a sucker for love songs and romantic gestures, and the lyrics in “Ode to a Conversation Stuck in Your Throat” are unlike any other. Its beat is reminiscent of “Morning Sex,” another one of my early morning or background music favorites.
- “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” by Amanda Seyfried, Ashley Lilley and Rachel McDowall
-
It’s fitting that one of my favorite movies also has one of the best soundtracks! I’ve been obsessed with all things disco since attending my sorority’s disco-themed date party in February. The shimmering disco balls, fun music and dancing in “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” leave me longing for a wild Greek party in the summertime.
