“You’re a goddess”—words any girl would swoon over. You might have grown up hearing this statement from an overly-doting family member or a grateful friend, but it’s almost always used as a moniker and not in the literal sense—unless you are Vanavia “Navy” Weatherly, that is. Every year the fraternities and sororities of OSU participate in a Greek-wide competition known as Greek Week, in which they compete in various activities, including variety acts and athletic contests, to prove who the “best” Greek house is. One of these competitions, known as the Greek Goddess, has representatives from each Sorority perform some type of talent in front of a panel of judges, who then determine the winner. This year, judges and competitors alike were all blown away by the incredible beat-boxing/singing performance done by Navy. Her performance earned her the coveted title of Greek Goddess 2011. Navy has accomplished the female dream of becoming an official Goddess, and now with her impeccable beat boxing talents exposed, this collegiette™ is bound for big things.
Major: Journalism
Hometown: Canton, Ohio
Year: Freshman
HC:What was the process you had to undergo to become “Ms. Greek Goddess?”
Navy: In my sorority, they nominated girls to represent AXO (Alpha Chi Omega). At the end of voting, I was nominated. There really was no process necessarily; I just had to be sure of my talent and the toga requirements.
HC: How do you feel now that you have won this title and has it changed you in any way?
Navy: I feel extremely honored and happy. I am so proud to represent AXO and myself very well by winning this title. In ways of changing me, I believe it has made me more confident and helped me realized that I am pretty good at beat boxing and singing since I was named Greek Goddess.
HC: What activities do you participate in, whether it be a university club or separate organization?
Navy: I participate in OSU Freestyle Rap & Beat-Box Club. I am the Secretary and Social Chair for the club. I am also involved in the Kuhn’s Honors & Scholars Pen Pal Program.
HC: As a Greek Goddess you must have some hidden talents. What would yours be?
Navy: My hidden talent which isn’t hidden anymore is that I can beat box. I can beat-box pretty much any modern day song, along with songs from the 80’s and 90’s. I also freestyle beat-box, so in that case I make up random beats too.
HC: In looking towards the future, what are a few of your aspirations both career-wise and personally?
Navy: An aspiration of mine is to be a journalist. I want to travel around the world, take pictures and write. I want to do that for a while. As well, I would like to go to graduate school for either massage or occupational therapy. These are two different things that aren’t really related, but they are both things I really want to do. I also want to sponsor some huge organization when I am older. On a personal level, I want to keep thriving as an individual and help those around me.
HC: Here at the OSU there are many traditions to be enjoyed. What are some of the activities that you believe every buckeye should experience before graduation?
Navy: Mirror Lake Jump is something that everyone should experience. Also, everyone should meet President Gee and take an O-H-I-O picture. Those things are very important to me because I have done them.
HC: Let’s say you were making an EHarmony account, what would you put down as a few of your “likes”?
Navy: Haha. Funny question! I like the rain, it helps me think; I like music a lot, all genres; I like to have a good time and meet new people constantly.
HC: If you could go to dinner with any famous person who would it be and why?
Navy: I would go to dinner with Blake Lewis because he is one person I admire. He sings and beat-boxes, and since I do the same, I think our dinner would be pretty awesome!
HC: Why should college students go Greek and what advice can you give to any aspiring Greeks out there?
Navy: Students should go Greek because you become a part of something unreal. Not only are you representing your college/university, but also those in the Greek community. You hold a title that will be with you for the rest of your life. I know this is a commonly-heard statement, but going Greek changes your life; it opens you up to a whole new aspect of life. This is something no one should miss out on. My advice to aspiring Greeks is don’t do anything that you don’t feel isn’t necessary. You should believe in yourself, and that will cause others to believe in you as well.
HC: Is there anything else you would like to say/ something that you would like people to know?
Navy: I am more than willing to teach people how to beat-box, because I truly believe everyone can do it!
