For an assignment in their Literary Citizenship class, 16 of SUNY Oswego’s Creative Writing students created a fully functioning website called The Hub to promote an online community for all writers. In just the few days that it has been up and running, universities from across the states have taken an interest in The Hub and have already shown their writing classes. Noteworthyauthors have even begun retweeting and following The Hub on Facebook. One of The Hub’s creators, Marian Holmes wants The Hub to be, “a place to share ideas, critique collaboratively, celebrate success, and offer assistance. It is there to benefit the current students, celebrate our alumni, and inspire the incoming academic freshmen.”
The most important thing about The Hub is that it has been created by the students for the students of Creative Writing, Journalism and Cinema and Screen Studies to have a place to grow as a community in a school where the math and science departments receive most of the attention. One of the best features that The Hub offers are open forums that anyone can submit their works in progress to receive constructive criticism. The point of The Hub is to be a stress-free environment to receive help from your peers on any type of writing that you are working on; however, to keep the sense of community you must be willing to critique someone else’s work in order to receive critiques. To continue to help Oswego’s writing students even after they have graduated, The Hub has created an Online Writing Circle that critiques on a monthly cycle. This web site goes far beyond writing assignments. On The Hub, there are places to submit book reviews and (hopefully in the future) movie reviews, shout-out’s to notable blogs that fellow students are writing, a list of competitions and publications that can be entered to get your writings out there, as well as step-by-step instructions to help create a resume or a “how to” to start your own blog. The point of this website is to help increase all writing students’ chances of becoming successful writers. After being published, The Hub will even celebrate your accomplishment on their applaud page. Being published anywhere on The Hub will be an excellent addition to your future resume, and it is quick and painless. Simply email your blog, book reviews, or writings to thehub@oswego.edu and they will take a look.
So get the word out there about The Hub! It is a great way to help further your own writing career as well as other writers in the writing community! Follow The Hub on all forms of social media!
