Thinking back on your freshman orientation can be a stretch, especially if you’re in your senior year, reliving those awkward small groups and forced activities. Whether you remember all of the details, or just specifics, you’re bound to remember the Laker Leaders that guided you from session to session.
This year, three lucky ladies will be forever known as “captain” to the new selection of Laker Leaders.
Sophomore meteorology major Molly Matott landed the job after only one year of being a Laker Leader. Striving to challenge herself and others, Molly knew that after being a Laker Leader for summer 2012, she was ready to do it again, but get a little something extra out of it.
“I tend to be very in the moment,” Molly says. “I’m motivated and just want to get others excited. If I love it, I can get other people to love it, making us that much more successful,” she says of the job.
Molly was pleasantly surprised upon opening her acceptance letter for the team captain position. Not entirely sure if she was going to get the job, she was wary of tearing the seal open, but her good luck streak continued as she read the “Congratulations!”
While being a team captain is a full time job in itself, Molly manages to thrive in her classes, report the weather for WTOP, dance for Del Sarte, all while being an honor’s student.
“In high school, I just sort of fell into things, I never really went out for anything,” she says. “In college, I wanted to change that about myself and try new things, or old things in new ways.”
Though only a sophomore, Molly has joined various groups allowing her to channel all of her sides.
“You can’t do the same thing all the time,” she says. “You can’t throw yourself into one thing too much. You have to work all sides of your brain.”
Full of sound advice and the mentality to go after what she wants, Molly is in store for a successful summer as the 2013 Laker Leader Team Captain.
With Molly’s vibrant, take-all personality, there has to be the right person to compliment this. Sophomore Nicole Schnorr, a human recourse management major, is just the ticket.
Nicole strived to be in the leadership role that encompasses being a team captain. Witnessing the tasks of the previous year’s captains, Nicole yearned for that sort of responsibility. Though only being a Laker Leader for a year, Nicole went out for the job.
“I’m always trying to take care of a problem, but I don’t spaz out about it,” Nicole says of herself.
A patient, sound mind is exactly what one needs to hold this position. A position that is necessary to hold a successful orientation program.
“Having student workers is important,” Nicole says. “This way it’s not just faculty telling you what to do. It’s important to have a student opinion and student voice.”
Being the voice of summer 2013 will allow Nicole to grasp the leadership role she desires. Like Molly, Nicole partakes in various, diverse activities, allowing her to try new things and meet different sorts of people. Nicole cheers for the Oswego State cheerleading club, while working in the development office in Sheldon Hall.
“If I did everything the same, I wouldn’t learn anything new,” Nicole says. “You learn to cope with different situations, like in the real world.”
With so much wisdom only as sophomores, these two ladies are going to do great things within their position and beyond it, along with captain Tara Fox (not interviewed).
