Stay Stylish Over the Summer: Simple Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

For Oswego collegiettes™, summer means being able to put away those sweaters we wear from October to April and finally break out the tank tops and shorts. These summer essentials will help you make the move from April showers to June summer nights simple.

Starting with accessories – embrace your inner Hawaiian with some fun flower hair accessories. Looking for inspiration?  Look up Princess Tatiana of Greece at the royal wedding. Whether your hair is all up or down in beachy waves, all styles look great with a simple flower clip or barrette. Short on cash? Make your own – you can find the supplies at any local craft store!

Next, it’s time to focus on nails. Put away the dark red vixen nail polish in favor of a brighter, more carefree color. This year, the fashion experts at Cosmopolitan are all about bright, bold hues with names like Purple Rain, Raspberry Jammin’, and Orange Crush.

Flip flops can be found everywhere, but sophisticate your style by adding some nice sandals to your closet. This summer, sandals with big decorations like flowers or metallic colors are definitely in. Try to avoid gladiator styled shoes – we have been ever since they made an appearance on the Fashion Trends that Men Hate (http://www.hercampus.com/school/ucf/fashion-trends-men-still-hate-part-2). Wedges will make their usual comeback as the days get longer, and are an easy way to make your legs look great instead of the traditional black pair of heels.

As the temperature heats up, add some sizzle to your wardrobe. Compliment your tan with hot pink, lime green, and neon yellow shirts to hang around in during the day. Or try channeling your inner hippie – according to E! News, tie-dye is the latest trend to show your carefree, summer-loving side.

A fun, flirty sundress is the staple of every summer wardrobe. Patterned dresses are great to also use as cover ups for the beach, like the ones at Victoria’s Secret. The same rules apply for sundresses – have some fun with your style by donning bright colors and tie-dye dresses. Looking for something more formal? Stand out in an all white or cream sundress like those sold at Delia’s. They add a little touch of sophistication and beauty to this summer staple.

Enjoy the summer months, and stay stylish with these simple tips!

Kaitlin Provost graduated from SUNY Oswego, majoring in journalism with a learning agreement in photography. She grew up in five different towns all over the Northeast, eventually settling and graduating from high school in Hudson, Massachusetts. Kait now lives in the blustery town of Oswego, New York, where she can frequently be found running around like a madwoman, avoiding snow drifts taller than her head (which, incidentally, is not very tall). She has worked for her campus newspaper, The Oswegonian, as the Assistant News Editor, and is also the President of the Oswego chapter of Ed2010, a national organization which helps students break into the magazine industry. She hopes to one day work for National Geographic and travel the world.
