This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oxy chapter.

Name: Shalini Pace
Year: Sophomore
Major/Minor: Religious Studies, potential minor in ECLS/Studio Art
Meet Shalini Pace! She can be found wandering through the quad or basking in the sun on a quad bench. Most of the time, you know when she’s around if you hear the jingle of her metal bracelets and infectious laugh.

1) So I heard you went to South Africa this past winter break on a Richter ASP grant. What was your favorite part of the experience? – My entire trip was really amazing so it’s pretty hard to narrow down specifics. Most of my family is from there so it made traveling around really convenient. I actually got a chance to go to this mountain range called Drakensburg which is right outside Jozi. I went with some family on the way back from Durban to the Cape. That was definitely one of my favorite experiences. I was there for about two days and it was just such a good time, hiking, swimming in the falls, horseback riding (who knew I could do that) family and food, such good food. The stars were unreal over there, breathtaking, I want to go back.

2) Favorite time of day at Oxy and why? – My favorite time at day at oxy… is sunset definitely. One of my favorite sites actually is the reflection of a particularly good sunset off the windows of the AGC buliding, you’re just surrounded by so many colors its incredible.

3) Who inspires you the most? – Hah, I’ve never put that much thought into that question. I’m inspired by so many people ranging from friends and family to prominent political and social figures. I don’t really know who inspires me the most out of all them.
4) What activities are you involved in on campus? – I work in the Bike Cage, I am one of the print studio techs in Weingart, and I am a research assistant for Professor Kagram of the DWA department

5) Why do you choose Religious Studies as your major? – The Religious Studies department was always appealing to me. It headed by a really excellent group of faculty, theory has always been an interest of mine. It is also one of the majors with the most freedom in that I am able to take many classes outside my major as well.

6) Tell us about the Bike Cage? – We’re open 2-6pm every Tuesday and Friday in the Rangeview Parking lot. Come rent bikes, if you have a bike already bring it in and we can tune it up, or just come chill with us!

7) Why did you choose Oxy? – Good school, close to home. (laughs)

8) Any recommendations on cool things to do in Eagle Rock or Pasadena? – Just get out, the best thing to do is explore, the Oxy bubble is suffocating, you can find cool places just about anywhere in these parts.

9) What’s your favorite childhood memory at Occidental College? – I can’t really remember but I went to the CDC the little preschool next the admissions building. One of my professor’s said that the earliest memory they had of me prior to coming to school here was when he was walking past the CDC while we were on recess and I was going across the monkey bars while all the other kids were chanting “Go Shalini! Go Shalini!” I just thought that was pretty hilarious.
