Like many college students, it is my first week back on campus after a month long break and it’s even better that the sun has finally peeked out from behind the clouds! Though I’ve only been in class for a couple of days, I can already tell that this will be challenging; this only reinforces the time management that I need to learn to manipulate at my will. I am sorry I haven’t introduced my classes to you guys yet, but here they are – BRIEFLY!
In your first year you are required to take a Cultural Studies Program (CSP) – one for each semester – which serve to hone your writing and critical thinking skills as well as introduce you to different fields of academic interests. Along with this, last semester I took courses revolving around Chemistry, Calculus, and Urban and Environmental Policy. It was fun but I feel like my load this semester will be even more challenging than the last. In conjunction with my CSP, I am also continuing to take Chemistry as well as Biology, Chemistry, and Spanish classes. I am a little daunted already, but the upcoming season – well, does California really have seasons anyway? – makes me forget my worries.
Now on to talking about what I really wanted to get to! It’s been getting nice, sunny and warm lately which signals the time where everyone can whip out his or her best summer attire – especially us girls! Personally, I am a big fan of dresses and always find myself wearing one no matter the weather. I find it easy to slip one on before class and not have to worry about the separates that can also make another outfit. However, the summer is the best time to incorporate different materials and color into your wardrobe. Not only can dresses be essential, but your other yearly staples may prove to be useful as well.
Outfit One: Ready, Set, DRESS up!
Dresses come in a variety of designs and colors and there’s almost always one to suit your taste! What I like about dresses is that after you shed your winter gear that you layer it with (i.e. sweater, long sleeve tops, jackets, vests, tights, coats) you’ll be able to pair it with a bunch of other items. These include sandals, denim shirts, lace vests, light cardigans…anything you want basically (:
Outfit Two: Take advantage of your shorts, skirts, and tops.
What I really like about these sets are the bright colors! Here, Elizabeth Olsen is modeling an outfit that has been outline as such. The skirt comes in an unexpected color and is paired with a light and airy top. Complementing the skirt is a pair of basic sandals that can be worn with any other outfit. In essence, colored shorts and skirts make an outfit more fun and when paired with neutral accessories and tops can make for an effortless look. Also, one of my favorite items of clothing is a nice denim/chambray shirt that can be the main focus on top but can also serve as another layer on top of a white t-shirt.
Outfit Three: Take a chance on those cropped pants, please.
Again with the tops, they can be handy in the hot weather so make sure that they can keep you comfortable. However, I would like to put some emphasis on cropped pants/trousers. I find that it can be flattering on all body types as they can be slimming and emphasize your waistline. Though summer can be hot, there are some days that are cooler than others and are a perfect opportunity to whip out those pants (: Here, they are pictured with two other summer accessories: sunglasses and sandals.
Outfit Four: Maxi dresses can work, so just work it!
Some don’t think that they can pull off a maxi dress, and I admit that at 5’3 it can be difficult to find one that is flattering on my body. However, I have found them to be useful because they can be versatile. Not only can they be worn alone but they can be converted to a skirt with the addition of a top or sweater (when it hits winter again, boo!!). Top it off with a cute belt and you are definitely ready to go!
Looking at your new books and readings for your class can be stressful in the beginning of the semester, so I hope that this was a good distraction and provided some inspiration for you ladies as well as getting you stoked for the summertime! I know, I know, it’s JUST January, but school does go by pretty fast. Now get back to work and do the best you can. Good luck!
*Editor’s note: even though it’s only January it sure feels like July on campus!
What are you looking forward to wearing this summer? Leave a note in the comments!
