Holidays can be a great time to celebrate the special people in our lives and spend time with those we care about. However, sometimes, the holidays can be the toughest if we’ve recently gotten out of a relationship or lost someone close. Since Valentine’s Day is coming up… the most notorious day of displaying love and affection… It can be hard for new singles and those struggling with a little self-love.

First of all. Who cares if you don’t have a quote-on-quote valentine? It doesn’t even have to be a significant other! It can be a close friend you just want to hang out with or a family member who you haven’t seen in a while. Your Valentine is anyone who you care about. End of story.

I stress self-love, especially around Valentine’s Day, because a lot of people do worry about not having a Valentine and it can bring up old memories of exes and what you two used to have. It can be discouraging and it can send people into a rabbit hole of self-pity and negativity.

Be easy on yourself. Things happen. Life happens. If that person is not meant to be in your life at that moment, there is a reason. This is a time for you to reflect on what you do have and how much the people around you love you. When we are caught up on this one person, we tend to forget about the rest of the world that still supports us. Heartbreak can also do this to us and it can really really suck, but we need to take this time to appreciate the good times and know that there is going to be more to come. It is not the end all, be all.
