19 Horror Movies that are Scarier than What’s Going on Outside

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pace chapter.

Horror films depict human nature at its most vulnerable moments. They catch characters off guard in the middle of their everyday lives. Much like the COVID-19 pandemic has to millions of people across the world. Horror filmmakers exploit the underlying of our greatest fears and use our flaws to critique society. As a horror movie buff, I am excited to see the films that will emerge from this pandemic. Surely apocalyptic, infectious, and maybe even zombie films will make a resurgence in the coming years. For now, while we are stuck inside, fearing the outside world, we might as well take a break from real-life dangers and divulge ourselves in fictional fears for an hour and a half. Here is my list of top ten and a few other honorable mentions:

Top 10

1. Nightmare on Elm Street (2010 remake)

2. Dream House

3. The Awakening

4. The Others

5. Sixth Sense

6. The Uninvited

My all-time favorite!

7. One Missed Call

8. Sinister (2012)

9. Insidious Franchise

– Once you watch one, you’re gonna want to grab a handful of snacks and binge-watch the rest!

10. The Conjuring Universe

– Yes, this is what the most famous horror franchise of our day’s fan name is. The Conjuring Universe is like to horror fans what Star Wars is to science-fiction lovers.

If You’re Trying Not to Sleep Tonight

11. Woman in Black (2012)

– It took me 3 days to get through this one because I kept having to turn it off!

12. The Ring (2002)

13. Pet Sematary (1989) and (2019)

-Being a horror fan, I have built up quite a tolerance. It’s hard to scare the hell out of me. Both the original and the remake mess me up for days. I hate watching them, literally. The remake adds a delightful twist to the original story.

Topical for this Pandemic

14. Viral

– Viewer Discretion Advised

15. Contracted and Contracted: Phase 2

16. 28 Days Later (2002)

Some Honorable Mentions

17. Crimson Peak

– The most cinematically stunning horror film I’ve ever seen. Mia Wasikowska wows viewers with another CGI based acting performance.

18. The Haunting in Connecticut (2009)

19. A Haunted House (2013) and (2014)

– If you are looking to laugh your way through this pandemic, these will keep you laughing till July.
