On March 24th, I had the opportunity to attend a Zoom listening party with the band Wallows to hear their new album, Tell Me That It’s Over, before it was released later that night. I’ve been counting down the days since the album was announced that I would finally get to hear it. Being able to listen to the full album for the first time with the band was something truly special that I’m very grateful for.
On the first listen of the album, my favorite song was “Marvelous.” This song is upbeat and reminds me of that feeling of developing a crush on someone and not being able to think of anything but them. “Marvelous” gives me jamming out in the car with your friends on a warm summer evening-type vibes.
One of the most special songs on this album is “Permanent Price.” Dylan had his girlfriend, Lydia Night, sing backing vocals with him on this song. It starts with discussing the price of falling in love with someone. The airy backing vocals give a soft and exciting feel to the song.
The ninth track on the album, “That’s What I Get,” is a vulnerable song showing the side of getting hurt in a relationship. Lyrics like “if you don’t want it, then you should spell it out” describe that feeling of being sick of all the games and mixed signals that I think everyone is tired of.
The last track on the album is “Guitar Romantic Search Adventure.” In my opinion, this is the perfect song to end the album with. The beautiful piano playing in the background gives the song a gentle and calming feeling to it – the perfect way to close out this album.
Tell Me That It’s Over gained 1.42M streams on its first day on Spotify, becoming the biggest daily debut for an alternative album by a band on Spotify this year. This album has already shown great success and in my opinion, is some of the band’s best work.
I have been obsessed with this album ever since it came out. It shows the growth of the band and how much their sound has evolved. This album was vulnerable and has a song for every mood. Wallows is going on tour this summer, and I have been thinking about it all day and all night counting down the days until my show. If you haven’t listened to Tell Me It’s Over yet, you’re missing out.
