Yes, I was one of the bunny totes in the movie theater last weekend seeing Marvel Studio’s Eternals, with the motive of seeing Harry Styles as Eros in the post-credit scene. But I walked out of that theater as a new Marvel Cinematic Universe stan.
While the two-hour and thirty-seven runtime were a bit intimidating (I have an awful attention span, one of the reasons I have never seen a Marvel movie), it was worth it in the end.
*Spoiler warning*
Let’s start with the characters. All of them I loved, some more than others *cough cough* Ikaris (Richard Madden), Sersi (Gemma Chan), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), and Druig (Barry Keoghan), and some less than others *cough cough* Sprite (Lia McHugh). But all of these characters and the rest of the Eternals, Thena (Angelina Jolie), Ajak (Salma Hayek), Gilgamesh (Don Lee), Kingo (Kumail Nanjinai), and Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), all brought something different to the table with their different personalities and powers and have such a special bond that it makes the audience feel connected to them.
While I am new to the MCU, I didn’t have anything to compare Eternals to as I didn’t start watching more Marvel movies until after seeing the film (I’m sorry Marvel stans), but one thing unique was the diversity of the cast. The representation in Eternals is so important! Makkari who has a huge impact on deaf representation as being the first deaf superhero.
And how could I not write about the post-credit scene? Not being biased, but Harry was a perfect fit for Eros, and even director, Chloé Zhao believed so too, stating that she “never considered casting anyone other than Harry Styles to portray Thanos’ brother Eros”. I am definitely excited to see him in future Marvel films to see what he does with his new character.
I’m glad Harry was cast, not just because I’m a stan, but I would’ve honestly never had seen Eternals, and I would’ve been missing out. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this film and me, a new Marvel stan.
