I’ve been a dedicated fan of award-winning singer-songwriter Taylor Swift for as long as I can remember. Her unapologetic and honest songwriting has been the soundtrack to my life as I’ve grown up listening to her music over the years. She’s a versatile and down-to-earth musician who has always remained transparent yet sophisticated in everything she does. Since her debut into the music scene 15 years ago, she’s continually evolved with every album, each era marks a distinct change in not only her sound but her style and overall aesthetic. In honor of Swift’s persistent evolution through the years, combined with my love for all things astrology, here’s an in-depth analysis of each album and its respective zodiac signs.
- Taylor Swift – Aries Sun, Gemini Moon, Pisces Rising
Taylor Swift entered the world of music in 2006 with her self-titled debut album that took the country music scene by storm. Aries being the “baby” of the zodiac is a perfect fit for Swift’s introduction into her lengthy but successful music career. This monumental breakout album had Swift emerging into the world as a yearning, wide-eyed, and cynical teenage girl who is equally brave and clever. There’s a sense of naivety and excitement in this album, which is perfectly encapsulated by the Gemini and Pisces placements. Pisces risings are idealistic and easy-going, which is balanced by the curious yet indecisive Gemini moon. There’s an almost childlike beauty to this underrated album that set the precedent for Swift’s sweet “girl-next-door” person
- Fearless – Cancer Sun, Taurus Moon, Sagittarius Rising
Upon the release of her highly successful sophomore record Fearless, Taylor Swift rose to a household name status with classic hits such as “Love Story” and “You Belong with Me”. The country-pop icon’s second album is full of relatable tracks about idealizing a fairytale romance through a teenage girl’s lens, similar to how Cancers picture love. When a Cancer finds a potential partner, they expect nothing less than total devotion and commitment. Fearless feels earnest and wandering, which screams earth sign to me, hence the Taurus moon. There are tracks on this record that feel stubborn and full of longing, see “White Horse” and “The Way I Loved You”, which is where the Sag rising comes into play. Fearless is layered with vigor and wild romanticism, but in Swift’s words, it’s an album that is “full of magic and curiosity, the bliss and devastation of youth.”
- Speak Now – Taurus Sun, Capricorn Moon, Libra Rising
If writing an entire album by yourself without the help of co-writers after facing criticism of your work doesn’t scream Capricorn to you, then I don’t know what does. This critically acclaimed pop-rock crossover album proved just how talented and determined she is as a songwriter. Speak Now is a sharply written collection of personal and confessional tales from her personal life as Swift navigated the transitional period into young adulthood while being in the spotlight. Taurus is one of the most steady and reliable signs, and being in love means everything to them. These traits are exemplified through tracks such as “Mine” and “Enchanted”. Libra risings are pleasant, sweet, and charming with a dreamy disposition – and Speak Now is an era defined by all its magical and theatrical aspects.
- Red – Sagittarius Sun, Scorpio Moon, Gemini Rising
Red is the first album in Swift’s lengthy catalog that marks the shift from adolescence to adulthood passionately and maturely. Sagittarius love the thrill and excitement that comes from love, and they constantly crave new adventures. The Red era saw Swift carry over into a more mature and experimental sound, which can be seen on tracks such as the dubstep influenced “I Knew You Were Trouble.” or the catchy pop banger “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”. Swift described this record as “all over the place, a fractured mosaic of feelings…Happy, free, confused, lonely, devastated, euphoric, wild, and tortured by memories past.” Scorpio is all about transformation, and the record marks a definitive turning point in Swift’s career. Gemini risings are always looking at life from new angles with a genuine sense of inquisitiveness, which is why Red is the perfect album for anyone with these placements.
- 1989 – Gemini Sun, Libra Moon, Leo Rising
The 1989 era established Swift as a global pop phenomenon. Arguably her most memorable and iconic era, 1989 is fierce and feminine with a sense of acute sensitivity. The glamour, New York City aesthetics and themes of fun and passion scream Gemini and Libra to me. These signs are undoubtedly outgoing, charming, and flirtatious through and through. Leo risings are known to be bright, shiny, and dramatic. At their best, they’re generous and attractive to others because of their natural confidence. “Blank Space”, “New Romantics” and “Style” are peak Leo energy, no doubt.
- Reputation – Scorpio Sun, Cancer Moon, Capricorn Rising
On the surface, Reputation is an album full of grievances written by a bitter Swift who was made out to be a snake by her rivals Kim Kardashian and Kanye West in 2016. Suffering from a damaged public reputation, Swift disappeared and carefully crafted her magnum opus Reputation. This edgy record is truly a love story as Swift entered her long-term relationship with Joe Alwyn and came to terms with her broken public image. Scorpios fall in love with great intensity and become deeply attached to their loved ones, but they treasure being in control of their thoughts and feelings, which can be seen on tracks such as the tender “Delicate” or romantic “New Year’s Day”. This album is built around bait and switch; we’re deceived by the petty and resentful songs such as “Look What You Made Me Do”. But are rewarded by passionate and intimate tracks such as “King of My Heart” or “Call It What You Want”. Cancer is a sign known to similarly bait and switch; they’re guarded, but utterly devoted to the ones they love most. Cap risings have a serious melancholic personality and are cautious with who they let into their life, similar to Swift’s outlook during this era.
- Lover – Leo Sun, Sagittarius Moon, Aquarius Rising
Moving away from the dark and edgy aesthetics of her previous work. Swift enters Lover with a new era full of bright, cheery, and colorful optimism. When Leo’s falls in love, they want the whole world to know. They bask in the comfort and adoration of their partner and will be faithful in return. Lover is packed to the brim with songs that fit this theme (see, “I Think He Knows, “Cornelia Street”, and the titular track “Lover”). Sags are innately optimistic, which this record perfectly captures in its fun, flighty, and sensual aesthetics. Aqua risings are unpredictable, intellectual, and exciting, just like Lover. This album is an emotionally honest and upbeat celebration of love in all its forms. It provides a gentler, more mature outlook on true love from a wise perspective.
- folklore – Pisces Sun, Virgo Moon, Taurus Rising
Folklore is a surprise album that Taylor Swift blessed us with during quarantine, and it will always have a place in my heart. Folklore pushed the limits of her sound and songwriting, as she moved away from her infamous autobiographical writing style and delved into fictional and historical stories for inspiration. The way it was written, recorded, and produced almost entirely in isolation. A required skill and innovation most commonly possessed by the ultra-creative Pisces and analytical Virgo. Folklore came out of nowhere but Swift’s pure imagination, without any plans or promotion ahead of time. This is similar to how Pisces have a reputation for being one of the most resourceful and innovative zodiac sign Taurus gets the upper hand as the rising sign because of its ruler being Venus, the planet that governs personal values and aesthetics.
- evermore – Virgo Sun, Pisces Moon, Scorpio Rising
Our final album in Swift’s discography (so far) is evermore, the equally as incredible sister album to folklore. It just makes sense that these two albums have similar placements, as they both stand out from anything she has released prior. Her writing has never been sharper or more mature as these gorgeous fictional tales she curated come to life. And what would be a more fitting rising sign than Scorpio, the sister sign to Taurus? Scorpios are a sign of great magnetism, with strong, churning emotions that are often kept hidden. These strong emotions can be found in tracks such as “happiness” or “tolerate it”, or even “cowboy like me”, a personal favorite of mine
