As midterms approach and my schedule becomes ever more hectic than it already is, I know taking care of myself will be the first thing thrown out the window. But in order to keep functioning at the level I need to be, it is important I put in extra effort to keep myself from spiraling out of control. Sometimes it’s okay to be selfish and say no to plans if you intend to spend that time focusing on yourself. Often times “self-care” lists include things such as face masks and bubble baths. And while that is sometimes what I need, other times it just doesn’t do it for me.
So with that in mind, here is a list of some self-care activities that do not involve “self-pampering”:
- Eat or cook something that makes you feel good! Nourishing your body is so important, especially when you are feeling stressed.
- Call someone you love! Not only will the surprise call make them smile, it will feel good reconnecting with someone you care about.
- Meditate. I will be the first to admit that I haven’t quite caught on to the whole meditation trend. Thankfully, there are some helpful apps to coach you through the process. If you aren’t a meditation expert, it can feel great to simply close your eyes and take a few of deep breathes.
- Plan an evening (or morning) of rest. That means no to-dos or errands allowed! No matter how busy your schedule is, you can afford a couple of hours to yourself.
- Take a class or try something new! Some suggestions are: cooking, yoga, barre, and kickboxing. Give something a shot that you think you’d enjoy.
- Make a list of all the things you are thankful for. Sometimes a little perspective can be good.
- Turn off your phone and get off social media while doing something you enjoy, such as reading or watching TV. Focusing on one thing at a time can help you to relax.
- Declutter your living space. After a busy week, my apartment can get messy. By taking a few minutes to put things away, I tend to feel a little more in control.
- Put on some music and have a dance party. Dance with abandon and sing as loud as you can.
- Visit a museum or make some art yourself. Working the creative side of your brain is a great way to destress.
Remember to check in with yourself on a weekly basis to make sure you are taking care of yourself. Self-care is so important, especially when we become super busy and stressed.
