So, it’s your first semester of college and you’re probably feeling one of two emotions: homesick and missing your family, or grown and ready to take on the world. Chances are, you’re probably feeling a little of both. But, you’re not the only one, Zoey Johnson is living the college life just like you in the new Freeform young adult comedy, Grown-ish.
This spinoff of the ABC comedy Black-ish is about Zoey Johnson, a freshman in college dealing with classes, stress, roommate conflicts, parties, relationships and other common topics that are seen and dealt with on real-life college campuses. The humor comes from the way viewers can relate to some of the experiences Zoe goes through, as well as how she feels. Whether it’s Zoe embarrassing herself while trying to talk to her crush, the struggles of a first internship, or struggling to maintain a social life while balancing college, Grown-ish perfectly depicts the ups and downs of college.
Yara Shahidi, who plays Zoey Johnson, is learning how to prepare herself for college in real life, based on her role. Shahidi is seventeen years old and has been accepted into Harvard University; although she had to defer attending due to filming, she will get to experience the college life twice. How cool is that?
To be honest, I didn’t think much of this show when I heard it was coming out, but after binge-watching five episodes, I was in love and understood why it’s a hit. Grown-ish has already been renewed for a second season and airs Wednesday, February 28th, giving you a couple days to binge and catch up on season one!
