This article contains spoilers for season two of Yellowjackets.
Showtime’s hit new show Yellowjackets just aired the midseason finale episode, “Two Truths and a Lie,” and it has left many questions about where the rest of the season will go. If you haven’t watched the show, Yellowjackets is about a high school girls soccer team, the Yellowjackets, headed to the Nationals game, when their plane gets into a crash in continental North America, leaving them to fend for themselves for 19 months as they are trapped in the woods. It also shows the present day in which those who made it out and survived the ordeal cope with leftover trauma, unanswered questions, and an ominous evil that still follows them.
So far this season we have gotten many open-ended questions answered from last season’s finale. After the unfortunate death of Jackie, we quickly learned what became of her remains. And what we learned is that there was a lot of cannibalism. After running out of meat that winter and finally deciding to burn Jackie’s remains, the inevitable feast scene took place, which many fans are referring to as “Snackie” and “Jackiefruit.” This alone has led to some new questions, though: if not Jackie, then who is the pit girl featured in the pilot? Were they hunting the pit girl for food?
Pit girl is definitely one question I hope we’ll finally get a definitive answer to in the rest of this season. At first, many people thought it was Jackie based on the fact that they were wearing the heart necklace that had belonged to Jackie originally. Obviously, though, after recent events, this is impossible. But the most likely pit girl, in my opinion, is Mari. Mari was just introduced this season, yet she doesn’t seem to be very well-liked by both fans and her fellow Yellowjackets. Along with this, Mari keeps hearing some sort of drip this season that no one else seems to be hearing, and this is what many are thinking of as a prophecy for her death. This sound might be the dripping of her own blood, a sign that she is the pit girl and about to die.
After the last episode, we now know that the pit girl can’t be Crystal after a chilling scene between Misty and Crystal, which lands Crystal… well, at the bottom of a cliff, dead. Misty confides in Crystal, basically telling her that she is the reason they are all still trapped, and she accidentally backs Crystal off a cliff, which left me with some questions about what this means for the rest of the season. I’m mostly curious about if the rest of the Yellowjackets find Crystal and whether they’ll find out the real reason Crystal died, or at least the events that led to her death. With this, I’m also starting to assume that it’s likely that Crystal’s body might have the same fate as Jackie’s and become the Yellowjackets’ next meal.
Toward the end of episode five, we can also see Shauna is about to give birth to the “cabin baby,” as some have called it. In present-day, she has her daughter, Callie, and many people at first thought Callie was the cabin baby, but the timeline doesn’t line up. Callie is still in high school, while the crash happened about 25 years before the present time we are seeing. So what does this mean? This different baby could mean quite a number of things depending on the fan you ask. Some people are going for the quite morbid assumption of the baby being their next meal, but pretty much everyone on the cast quickly denied this one, acknowledging it to be a bit too far, even for them. Though another theory suggests they might still kill the baby, but in this case as a means of sacrifice, not food. Meanwhile, others theorize this baby actually made it out safe and sound and was just given away and later becomes a member of Lottie’s cult in the present day. I personally find this to be an interesting arc, especially since it seems to be the most humane one, but it also leaves a lot more questions than any of the other theories about the baby. Unfortunately, one of the more rational and also sadder scenarios is that the baby was either a stillborn or suffered complications and didn’t survive. While it is fun to theorize, this might be more plausible than some of the other previously listed theories.
Finally, one of the other big questions I’m hoping to get answered is what the hell happened to present-day Travis. After hearing more of the story of how he died from Lottie’s point of view (not that I entirely believe it), there’s some more possible insight into what might have happened. Part of me almost finds this to make Lottie more suspicious, but so far there is no concrete evidence showing she did anything with intent. After seeing Lottie attempt to help Travis get in touch with what some of them had seen in the forest, this obviously didn’t pan out as planned since he, well… died. To me, this didn’t make sense. Many fans are suggesting she got distracted by either hallucinations or visions of some sort and just lost focus, but to some degree, it almost felt purposeful. I’ve seen some Reddit theories also suggesting it was another matter of sacrifice to try to rid her of her visions. This to me makes the most sense since they had been an issue plaguing her all her life. So why wouldn’t she try to get rid of it in any way she knew how?
Overall, this season so far has been phenomenal and has really set the stage for episode 6, which the cast themselves have been hyping up since the season premiere. I’m curious how many of these theories I’ve heard and personally thought up are actually accurate. I’ve also seen many theories about the “Antler Queen,” but I honestly felt they were baseless. I don’t think we have enough information to actually have an accurate gauge of who this person is or what they stand for. I’m also excited to finally get a deeper look into Lottie’s cult after we’ve learned about some of its strange perceived freedoms in the last few episodes, along with the long-awaited reunion of the known Yellowjacket survivors all these years later, and at the cult grounds, nonetheless. I’m also very interested to see where they take the supernatural aspect, especially as we keep learning more about Taissa’s link to it. After seeing her sleepwalking escalate to literally maiming her family dog, the “dark one” is surely something I would love to see get more attention in the rest of this season. Also, I have about zero faith in coach Ben making it through at this point, especially since the present day has had no mention of him, but only time will tell. I think so far this season has proven this show to be one of the best shows airing now, and was a truly good start for the renaissance of Melanie Lynskey, which I am very much here for. The next episode, “Qui,” comes out May 7, and with that, a lot of questions will hopefully be answered.
