You’ve probably mistaken him for an actual person. Or perhaps you coyly waved only to be met with a cold and static bronze grin. But he’s not apathetic, he’s not ignoring your smiles and advances, he’s just a statue, doing what statues do best, inert and probably silently observing you, all from the comfort of a bench.
As the school year comes to a close, the statue of Mr. George Pepperdine, our school’s namesake and founder, rounds out our last campus profile for the 2015-2016 school year.
Name: George Pepperdine but my friends call me G, G.P., Big G, or the G man.
Pet peeve: when the sun shines down on me (I become hot to the touch and my lack of mobility becomes really irksome!)
Favorite food from the Caf or HAWC: anything that’s not from the vegan/vegetarian section. Also, Rice Krispy treats all the way, man!!
Hobbies: staring contests, remaining still (and silent!) for hours in succession, and tricking people into thinking I’m an actual person. I also enjoy people watching, long immobile walks on the beach, and eavesdropping on student’s phone calls.
Best thing about your view: The most rewarding part of being stationed in Mullin Town Square is watching the 15 students in a class of 250 show up to their 8 a.m. lecture class in Elkins. What can I say? It warms the cockles of my heart! What dedication!
Favorite spot on campus: Obviously Mullin Town Square. I’m a statue, I can’t move.
Favorite thing about Pepperdine: All the stairs. It’s great for fitness and has no bearing on me whatsoever. I love to sympathize with students about how grueling it is to make the hike to the CCB as I remain glued to this bench.Â
