My Campus Feature: Top 5 Fall Trends – California Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pepperdine chapter.

I think it’s safe to say that California lacks in the seasons department. Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall exist, but the weather doesn’t often follow traditional expectations. Now that it’s fall, a classical expectation involves falling leaves, scarves, beanies, boots, and cold weather. However, here in LA, that is not the case. In fall, the weather is a confused mixture, thus causing us to wonder whether or not it is hot enough to wear flip-flops, or cold enough to bring a sweater. Here are five California fall fashion trends that are comfortable transitions between the really hot weather of summer and the slightly cooler weather of fall.

Dark lips

The most obvious change in make-up routines for the transition from summer to fall is the change to dark lip colors. The lips, in particular, should always be taken into greater consideration than the rest of the face, as lip color is often the altering factor of a look. A woman can look as if she is wearing a full face of makeup, as long as she is wearing lip color. The darker the color, the more defined a girl’s features are exemplified. Fall lip colors include shades of violet, berry, and brown. These colors can later transition to the glamorous red of the holidays.

Skirts

Jeans are more for the cool days of winter, but what do you wear when the weather transitions from a cool morning to a warm day? The answer – A skirt! There is many ways to style a skirt for maximum comfort. Stockings paired with a skirt or knee-high boots fit this trend well. A preppy look like Blaire Waldorf from Gossip Girl will fit this style for fall.

Crop top and Sweater

Fall in California looks like this: The mornings are cool and the weather becomes warmer as the day continues. A fall trend that most people opt for is a crop top and sweater. It’s simple, doesn’t require a lot of thought to pick out, and is comfortable and versatile. Feeling a little cold? Put on sweater. Feeling warmer? Take it off.

Cuffed Jeans

I’ve seen quite a bit of this trend on campus and I think it’s trendy. The cuffs illustrate the end of summer and the transition to fall. Full length jeans will be the next phase. This trend is best worn with flats, boots, or any pair of open-ankled shoes. These would also look great with a tank top or sweater.

Ankle Boots

Hey babe, nice boots! Ankle boots are definitely a transitional item. They are not quite regular shoes, nor exactly full length-boots as the boots stop slightly below the ankle. They’re just warm enough to cover your feet but cool enough to leave some breathing room for your legs. These are best worn with shorts or jeans. Wear it with a crop top, sweater, and skirt and you have got yourself an outfit!

My name is Queenie Navarro and I am an Accounting major in my 3rd year at Pepperdine University. On campus, I am involved with the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and am currently interning for College Fashionista as a Style Guru. In my free time, I enjoy going on spontaneous adventures and am devoted to the belief that life is about taking chances and trying everything that the world has to offer. I've shopped 'til I've literally dropped, I used to be part of a punk rock band, I've tried everything from escargot to scorpions on a stick, and have been fortunate enough to travel in over 40 countries before I even turned twenty. Overall, I consider myself to be a very open-minded person and am inspired, daily, by the people around me. One day, I dream of working for the corporate offices of some fashion magazine while hopefully getting to travel the world.
