10 Non-Scary Halloween Movies

Halloween is a time of spooky and scary, but I won’t lie I hate scary movies (and I know I’m not alone). Here is a list of 10 non-scary Halloween movies that you can enjoy this Halloween season.

Hocus Pocus

The classic Halloween Movie that I love watching every year. Here, we follow teenager Max who just moved to Salem and is struggling to fit in. On Halloween night, he awakens a trio of diabolical (and hilarious) witches and must stop them to save Halloween. This movie is the perfect mix of comedy and magic for Halloween with all the classic notes of witches, shapeshifting, and black cats. Highly recommend it, and if you want more, they released a sequel last year.

Halloween Town

Another iconic Disney Halloween franchise of 3 movies. Here, we follow 13-year-old Marnie who learns she is a witch on her 13th Halloween and gets whisked away with her younger sibling and her grandma to Halloweentown, a place where ghosts, ghouls, witches and other big Halloween characters can live apart from the mortal realm. These movies are short and perfect to watch on Halloween.

Practical Magic

While this one doesn’t distinctly take place on Halloween; it has all the perfect bits and pieces that make it a great Halloween watch. This movie follows the “bewitching” sisters Sally and Gillian Owens who descend from a long line of witches and are impacted by a love curse that is said to kill their true loves. Sally and Gillian have to team up and use their practical magic to destroy an evil spirit before it destroys them. This movie is the perfect blend of gothic, witchy aesthetics, romance and sisterhood.

Scooby Doo (2002)

This wouldn’t be a Halloween movie list without the cult classic Scooby Doo. Here, we follow the iconic mystery gang as they travel to a mysterious horror-themed island to investigate a new mystery. While I definitely would not say this is the best movie by any means, Scooby Doo offers the perfect slightly spooky but non-scary vibes to watch on Halloween.(Maybe I’m slightly prejudiced because I have dressed as Velma before).

The Nightmare Before Christmas

What’s Halloween without Tim Burton? The first of two Tim Burton films on this list; this musical tale follows Jack Skellington the King of Halloween Town who stumbles upon Christmas Town and schemes to take over the Christmas holiday. Honestly, I watch this movie for both Halloween and Christmas (and now you can too)!

twitches

Underrated Disney Halloween movie, who? Twitches follows identical twin sisters separated at birth on Halloween night Alex and Cameron born of the magical dimension of Coventry who are sent to the mortal realm to be protected. But, on their 21st birthday, the sisters reunite and learn of their witch ancestry to return to Coventry and save it from a Darkness that plagues the land. I honestly don’t know why more people don’t watch this one!

corpse bride

The second Tim Burton movie on this list; Corpse Bride is another stop-motion animated musical film following the arranged marriage of Victor to an aristocratic Victoria who meet and fall in love. While practicing his wedding rehearsal, Victor accidentally awakens and marries a dead woman Emily who whisks him away to the Land of the Dead. This slightly more bittersweet movie has the perfect vibes and storytelling fitting of a non-scary Halloween.

The Rocky horror picture show

Rocky Horror Picture Show is the iconic parody of many kitsch science fiction and horror films. This wild ride of a movie follows a young engaged couple whose car breaks down near a castle. When they go to find a phone and call for help, they instead meet the head of the house (and mad scientist/alien) Dr. Frank N Furter who creates a living muscle man Rocky in his lab.

The Addams family (1991)

This list wouldn’t be complete without the family that lives and breathes Halloween all year long. This 1991 comedy is based on the characters from the iconic cartoon that follows the bizarre and macabre Addams family as they reconnect with whom they believe to be the long-lost relative, Fester Addams.

ghostbusters

WHO YOU GONNA CALL… it better be the Ghostbusters. This iconic franchise is the perfect supernatural comedy to finish off the non-scary Halloween movie list. Here we follow 3 eccentric parapsychologists who start a ghost-hunting business in NYC. Hunting ghosts, amazing themes and horrible animations make this movie the perfect non-scary Halloween movie.

Thanks for reading, and I hope these movies make your Halloween just a bit less scary!

Hi my name is Isabella! I am a returning member in the HER campus Pitt chapter, and I would love to write about pop culture, mental health, books, and movies! I am currently a junior nursing student with a concentration in psychology and a minor in English literature. One day I hope to pursue graduate school in clinical or research psychology, so I absolutely will take any chance to talk about mental health in anyway possible! Some little things about me. I love to read and you will oftentimes catch me curled up in bed with a warm cup of tea with some Hozier or Lana Del Rey playing in the background. Some of my favorite books include the Raven Cycle, The Secret History, The Darker Shade of Magic Trilogy. I also love to write poetry and crochet in my free time, and I am currently creating a patchwork cardigan !
