Although trends change from season to season, it is no secret that there are a few staple pieces every girl should have in her closet all year long. You never know when you might need to pull out a dress for a special occasion or when those rain boots might come in handy when the weather isn’t too great. Let’s face it, everyone needs these basic yet essential items that will never go out of style. This list of wardrobe essentials will keep you consistently looking classic by including your absolute must-haves.

1. Black Pumps: It’s simple: they go with everything and that’s why they are an essential building block for your wardrobe. There are many different directions you can take with the black pump: leather, suede, patent leather, platform, etc. They can be used to dress up or dress down an outfit, depending on the time of day and your outfit of choice. The main thing is, you’re going to want to invest in a quality pair to ensure they last a long time.

2. Little Black Dress: This is usually a piece worn at night to some kind of cocktail event. Little black dresses can be cute, short, mid-length, maxi, simple, and elegant. The LBD is just another essential that can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. For example, it can be worn with a blazer or business jacket with a pair of flats, or by itself with fancy accessories and heels. It is important to remember that this type of dress is meant to remain simple so it doesn’t go out of style and will stay in your closet forever.

3. Leather Jacket: There are so many different kinds of leather jackets—some that are more playful for a night out, and some that are more casual and classic for a daytime or professional look. Although it may be tempting to pick up a faux leather, investing in a quality, real leather jacket will last in your closet for years.

4. Classic Pair of Shades: Sunglasses are one of those things that go from trend to trend faster than denim skirts went out of style. However, there are a few shapes and brands that should always remain in your closet and are definitely worth the splurge. They’re kind of similar to a pair of jeans: the overall look may change, but you’re always going to need them anyways!

5. Red Lip: A classic red lip is one of the ultimate beauty essentials. A red lip is bold enough to play up any simple outfit or the perfect accessory to a glamorous statement look. It’s important to test out a bunch of different shades of red before buying the right one that compliments your skin tone.

6. Shoulder Bag: There are without a doubt several different handbags every woman should own. But, if handbags aren’t your thing, at least invest in one—some type of shoulder bag.  Trust me, it will be useful when you have a party or event to attend and don’t know where to keep your phone, makeup, and keys for the night.

7. Skinny Jeans: I think it’s pretty obvious why everyone needs a pair of jeans in their closet: they go with everything. I remember when skinny jeans used to be considered a fad, but it is clear that they aren’t going out of style any time soon. Skinny jeans can be worn throughout every season and can be paired with boots, fashion sneakers, flats, heels… any type of shoe you can imagine. They’re also fun to play around with because of the endless amount of washes and styles, from high-waisted to the “destroyed” or acid wash look.

8. Blazer: A blazer is the perfect jacket if you’re going for a professional look. Whether it be an interview, a typical day at work, or an event, a simple (black) blazer is going to complete your outfit every time. There are blazers that are cropped, some that are longer, and everything in between. Tip: make sure your blazer appears to be more fitted in the waistline area; they shouldn’t be too loose or too tight.

9. Rain Boots: Hunter is probably the most well-known name in the world of rain boots. Although they aren’t the cheapest option out there, they will definitely do the job and keep your feet dry. They are also stylish and can be made warmer by purchasing the sock liner on the side. Plus, there are endless colors and styles to choose from, so your feet will always be happy in the rain!

10. Denim Jacket: Besides the leather jacket, the denim jacket is another staple item you need in your closet. This one has never gone out of style, especially since the days Jennifer Aniston rocked them on Friends. I remember wearing them even when I was little! There are so many ways to wear this piece, with so many styles to choose from. The great thing about this jacket is that it is transitional, meaning it can be worn in almost every season.
