Many students at Pitt are from the beautiful city of Pittsburgh itself, and some of them are from “right outside of Philly.” Anyone from outside the state can name those two cities, which leaves Central Pennsylvania almost forgotten. However, those of us from Central PA know that it’s one of the most unique places to call home. There are even several quirks and specialties known only to our particular region.
1. Horse and Buggies are EVERYWHERE.
2. There’s a lot of influence from the Pennsylvania Dutch.
3. Like scrapple…
4. …and REAL Pot Pie.
6. These are called whoopie pies, not gobs. But they’re still delicious.
6. KNOEBEL’S
7. Hershey is more than just chocolate and roller coasters.
8. We shop at Giant (not Giant Eagle).
9. And Bon-Ton.
10. We know how to pronounce the word “Schuylkill” (and spell it).
11. We know there is a difference between Amish and Mennonite.
12. There’s probably a Tractor Supply Co. within 10 miles of your house.
13. In contrast to many people’s thinking, we don’t all live on farms.
14. And we are not all Amish.
15. The Farm Show is a big deal.
16. The milkshakes are an even bigger deal.
17. Every small town has a fair.
18. Finally, we all know it is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
