Going out: Let’s Have Fun, Without the Drama

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

In light of recent events, I have decided to put together a small list of tips and tricks on how to go out and have a great time, but also avoid any mishaps. It’s all fun and games till….its not….

1. STICK TOGETHER

It seems like a pretty simple task and yet somehow people still end up lost and alone. When you are out it may be hard to keep track of your friends but always have a buddy or two, at least. That way if you are in a large group and get split up, no one is left alone. If you notice your friend wants to leave (go get Sorrento’s, go home, etc.) then go with her, yes, even if you are talking to a cute guy. The cute guy you just exchanged two sentences with can wait; stick together with friends, always.

2. KEEP YOUR PHONE CHARGED

It’s 2014 people: we live on our phones, sad but true. As you are getting ready to go out, charge your phone! Simple, yet effective. In case you get lost or separated, blow up all your friends and get back with them! If your phone is dead, this task becomes a thousand times harder. Also if you get lost you can always look up directions on Google maps and get bus times. Don’t forget there is always Safe Rider (412-648-2255), I know it may not be the fastest but still do not hesitate to call them, they are here for Pitt students. It is very important to keep the phone charged, so get off Instagram and save the battery in case you need it later.

3. KNOW YOUR LIMITS

I know it is very easy to get carried away when it comes to drinking. Who doesn’t want to let loose every once in a while? However, it is important to know your limits, for your own safety. It may not seem like a big deal but alcohol can have detrimental effects on the body and, no one wants to be sent to the hospital. If consumed in high enough amounts, alcohol can lead to death. Just make sure to watch yourself and your friends; if you see them getting a little out of hand, switching to water is a good idea. If you ever feel that someone may need medical attention, seek help immediately; don’t wait before it’s too late. Call the Pitt Police, they are here to help (412-624-2121).

4.  AVOID WARDROBE MALFUNCTIONS

I get it, you are wearing your favorite cute undies but I really don’t want to see them. Ladies, please wear shorts under any short skirts or dresses that have the possibility to ride or fly up. Pittsburgh can be windy, keep that in mind. In order to have a good time, I feel it’s important to dress in something that you feel good in. I have finally mastered finding heels that are cute and comfortable (protip: find heels that have a thicker heel or a wedge style and ones that are a bit snug that will stretch with wear and, if they are too big you will have issues). Also make sure everything you wear fits right; if it is too small you might feel uncomfortable or self-conscious, or if it is too big it may end up falling off and exposing more skin than you had anticipated. Play it on the safe side and wear things you are comfortable in, you’ll feel good even if those 6 inch heels are super cute.

I hope you find my short list helpful in ensuring you have a good and safe night out collegiates!
