It’s that time of year again: sending out tons of resumes and cover letters in hopes of finding a summer job or internship. See some of the embarrassing and weird things that have happened to our members during interviews!
Casey:
“As a writing major, my go-to answer for “What do you like to do in your spare time?” is “reading/writing,” so when I received the question “OTHER than reading and writing, what do you do in your spare time?” I panicked. I basically said I enjoy drinking – I did clarify that I was 21, though…I also do this fun thing where, when someone leans in for a handshake, I get nervous, lean away from them, and wave to them.”
Lexi:
“My roommate has been interviewing for med schools lately, and more than once, interviewers have tried to lighten things up by asking, “What is the last movie you have watched?” After a couple of times of being asked this, she came home and said to me with the most serious expression, “Can we please watch another movie soon? I’m tired of telling med schools about Shrek…”
Kelly:
“One time in high school I was interviewing at Forever 21 and they asked me what I would have the most trouble with – I said working the cash register and knowing where things were…which was basically the whole job! I was just trying to be honest though, like how do you answer that without sounding bad? I didn’t get the job.”
Caroline:
“This past March, I had a phone interview with some new hire at the company. He’s only like two years older than me and he had no questions for me, so I basically ended up interviewing him. Apparently, I sounded nervous and bored (can you be those things at the same time?). Didn’t get the job.”
Ashleigh:
“Once I was asked, “If you had to get rid of one state which would you pick and why?” My answer was South Dakota because the Dakota’s don’t really do anything, so why do there need to be two? They should just become one Dakota. I literally have NO IDEA where this came from…”
Katie:
“A few weeks ago, I was going through the interview process for an internship I’m really interested in. We had conversed over email a few times and spoken on the phone already. It wasn’t until I was preparing for an in-person interview and I looked up her name on LinkedIn that I realized I had been spelling her name wrong in my emails to her. When I met her, I apologized profusely and she laughed it off saying it happened all the time but I was SO embarrassed.”
